Spec me a monitor

I’m looking to buy an external monitor for my laptop. It will be used for Photoshop, university work, web browsing and so on. I won't be running any games on the monitor. My laptop runs off an Nvidia 740M GT, which has HDMI and VGA ports. I’m currently using a 21” 1080P monitor. I would like something with a higher resolution as I find it a bit limiting when I have multiple documents open. I would like to keep the price under £400.

I’ve been looking at 4k. However, it would appear that I won’t be able to make full use of it as I don’t have a DisplayPort connection. I’m not sure if this would be an issue with my intended usage?

The other option I’ve considered is going for a 1440p setup.

Can anyone offer any advice or point me in the direction of any recommended reading?

Thanks in advance.

Pixel density is one thing. At 4k on anything less than 32" you usually have to use display scaling, which theoretically means you are using a lower resolution, hence you have a 4k monitor and you are not using it to its full potential, which more than likely means you are wasting money on the 4k aspect.

I'm just about to pull the trigger on the U2515. I wanted to clarify one thing before I buy it.

kefan77 said I should get an adaptor. I'm assuming this because My graphics card has an HDMI port and the monitor has an HDMI (MHL) port? Do I need an adaptor as the monitor does not have a standard HDMI port?
