Spec Me A Motherboard

I'm looking for a new motherboard since it appears my current one has... issues. I'm told an ASUS P5Q would be a good replacement for my current ASUS P5N-E, but I'm not sure which one.

It would need to cope with my current hardware. I'd also like to OC my CPU up to 3.0Ghz - 3.2Ghz if possible, so any motherboard that would make that easier would be good.

Any help greatly appreciated :)

My current spec:
  • Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650 M/B
  • Corsair TX750W PSU
  • Intel C2D E6600 2.40GHz CPU
  • ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2048MB GFX
  • OCZ 4GB (4x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Platinum Rev 2 RAM

Which P5Q motherboard should I go for?
And should I upgrade the E6600 to a Q6600?

Thanks :)

The P5Q should be fine - but equally, with the E6600, there is no reason at all why the P5N-E can't clock this to over 3Ghz. They clock dual core CPUs very well, it is just the quads where you have difficulty

i would go for any of the p5q range - just find one with the featureset that suits your needs
the standard p5q is fine [ie.cheapest]

i got the p5qe for the nice looking heatpipes and i had the cash - they all overclock well too

no sli on the intel chipsets -but that isnt a big deal really - especially as you have an ati card

go for this

just for reference - my p5qe was £99 form overclockers a while back - they have gone up considerably - but i guess the economic situation the world is in doesnt help at all

like it said in the post before mine - why not go for a better cpu cooler if you want to oc more?

TRUE
noctua
tuniq

etc

Yeah that was the plan :(
Unfortunately there appears to be some strange problems with my P5N-E.

I was posting HERE about OC'ing and ran into issues.

The MB still only runs with 1 stick of memory in it, even after a full CMOS reset. I have verified all 4 sticks of memory run fine when inserted by themselves. And I confirmed all 4 sticks work fine in another MB. I don't appear to be getting anymore help with it so thought I'd just bite the bullet and buy a new MB

If you want to double up on cards, with your ati, you'd need a crossfire compatible one.

ATi - Ctossfire

Nvidia - SLi

Unless they have changed that?

Doh! I do have a thread going HERE about problems with my ATI card.

Always had problems with ATI in the past, really don't know why I listened to other people and tried one again. Looks like I'll be RMA'ing it.

I generally prefer NVidia cards. If I was going to SLi two NVidia's then I couldn't use the P5Q motherboard?

It would be ok with a single NVidia card though?

In which case I guess the standard P5Q would suffice?

Gaaah! :p

Ok, so I guess THIS one that was suggested earlier in the thread will serve my needs fine?

Won't have an issue OC'ing my E6600 to 3.2Ghz with it?

I'll wait for a few more comments before I make the purchase just to be sure :)
