My Dad had the amazing idea of fitting a new alarm, now I don't know anything about this so could somebody help me.

If my car is locked would it sound the alarm if the car is knocked or scraped? Chances are, if my car is outside my house, then I'm in so I would nearly always be there to go and have a look if an alarm went off.

How much would something like this cost?

dont

it will go off every time somebody drives by it. You'll annoy your neighbours and everybody will ignore it as it goes off all the time. The time it does go off when somebody crashes into it, you'll ignore it as you think its another false alarm.

Clifford Concept 650mk2 with dual zone proximity.. £350 ish fitted

Even if you don't get an alarm with the dual-zone proximity sensors, if the sensitivity is set to an adequate level and someone bumps into the car, that should be enough to set it off.

You could also go with a tilt sensor I suppose, although it does depend how sensitive they are.

Will you be fitting yourself? You can pick up the Toad Ai606 for £100 on a certain auction site.

Don't

Seconded.

I had one of these on a car some time ago and every time a bus or lorry drove down the road or some nutter went roaring past in a BMW, the bloody alarm went off. It drove my neighbours mad and eventually the sensitivity was set so low that you would have had to roll the car to set it off - a complete waste of money.

Don't do it!

obviously was a pile of crap that wasn't installed properly then..

more than likely it was a toad ai606 which was purchased from an auction site and was installed by someone who "thinks" they know what they are doing..

I see it every day

The dual-zone proximity sensor is just a plug in module, so how would that have any bearing on how the alarm is installed?

Bar maybe a dirty earth causing the alarm to go off sporadically.

Oh, and you'd be suprised just how bad some 'professional installers' can be. I ripped this mess out of my car the other week. A previous owner had paid £400 to have this alarm installed.

Those relays were used to control the central locking, when it's pretty simple to just connect the alarm directly to the CS solenoid.

Not to mention the drivers door that wouldn't unlock from the standard keyfob (but would from the aftermarket alarm) and bare wires running to the rear door sensors and boot.
