Hi,

I'm looking to get back in to riding after many years out. I would like to start with a new mountain bike for now as I think this will be a bit more versatile while I'm getting back to fitness, then I'll plan to pick up a road bike and start commuting in the long term.

So for now I'm looking for the best mountain bike for around £500 - £750.

Lots of googling and a few searches on here seem to point to the specialized rockhopper. 600 standard, 700 for the comp with suntour fork or 800 for the rockshox expert version.

Any others I should be looking at?

Where would your money go?

Thanks!

Go to a bike shop, makes niggles easier to sort and gives you a valuable source of parts and knowledge.

Look for hydraulic disc brakes and a fork with rebound damping.

I will, I'm just doing some research first. I went to my local bike shop today, one I've used for years and they had nothing under a grand!

Maybe a Cube Acid? Cube's seem pretty well specced for the money. My brother got an Acid, and he loves it. I'd say it's well worth the money.
