Hi all,

I've reached the point where just using internal/external HDDs for backup is no longer suitable for me, so I'd like to get a decent NAS setup going.

I've been looking at the range on oc and other online stores for the past few days and to be honest I'm still not sure what would suit me best. And the reviews, which I'd usually use to guide me, have tended to be pretty unhelpful. I'll need at least a dual drive bay system, but a quad may be useful. I have 2 1Tb HDDs sat around doing nothing so I won't need to buy too many drives right away either.

I intend on using the NAS to backup my Windows PC (at least 2Tb req'd), my mothers Windows laptop (a couple of hundred Gb will do that) and most importantly my Macbook Pro (1Tb+ req'd). I say most importantly for the MBP because it's used as my primary system for all my photography work, and as such has a lot of irreplaceable data on it. Therefore a NAS that support Apple Time Machine backup is essential.

Budget wise, I'm pretty flexible. I'd like to keep it below £250 if possible, but have no issues paying more IF it would get me a genuinely useful feature. But at the same time, the cheaper the better, as long as it does what I need. There is also no massive urgency as I have backups in place, they are just running out of space.

So in summary I'm after:

A 2 or 4 bay NAS, with gigabit LAN support for £250, or less if possible). With support for Apple Time Machine backups and bundled Windows backup software would be nice (as long as it works).

I've just bought one, a Western Digital 3TB My Book Live. Its as about as simple a NAS gets from what Ive read, but its only to allow me to stream 1080p bluray media to my WDTV downstairs. It was very easy to setup, more so than I was expecting. Unfortunately I've not yet tried the streaming as I'm awaiting my cat5e being installed downstairs.

Transfer between NAS and Laptop via cat5e though is showing excellent speeds (gigabit standard).

...price? £130. Sorted.

As for backups - I still hold a backup of my NAS on another set of USB HDD. You never can be too sure. I once had a Verbatim 2TB fail on me - I considered murder at one stage.

Its a fixed drive too, not removable. As I say... basic :)
