Hi,

Luckily I'm going to be working from home come September and I'm looking to do a new build to replace my old i3 2120. It's been 6 years since the last build so I'm fairly out of touch although it looks like AMD might now be a competitive option to intel?

The work I'll be doing will mainly be internet based, emails and microsoft office. I'll also be using the pc for a bit of video editing. As an ex-gamer there's a chance I may look to jump back in and the option to add a high-end graphics card further down the line would also be attractive.

I already have a monitor (1920x1080), mouse, keyboard, speakers and OS covered.

Any suggestions on a spec?

Cheers

Go for the ryen 1600 and work outward, DONT buy the gfx card now, as miners have pushed up the prices ALSO you will not get any work done.

Looks good but you'll need a basic graphics card for now, as the Ryzen 1600 has no integrated graphics. Maybe go for cheaper RAM and/or cheaper case to cover the cost, you can still find 3000MHz for £120-ish.

This should be fine for the video editing and a bit of gaming on low/medium graphics.

The Fractal Focus G case will cope better than the Raijintek Styx with a high-end video card in future.

If you fancy the Samsung 850 EVO it can be found for not much more than the WD Blue.

The Toshiba P300 should come back in stock pretty quick I'd imagine.

The prices on the RX 460 haven't been affected by mining so no overpaying for this one. Although you could get something even cheaper.

Thanks Danny. Would the 3000MHz ram work with the motherboard? On the description it says "Support for DDR4 3200(O.C.)/2933(O.C.)/2667/2400/2133 MHz memory modules"

Samsung SSDs have lower RMA rates than other SSDs, and you should read this article by Backblaze on HDD failure rates.

Thanks. Do you think I may be better off going with the 500gb Samsung? Then I could get an additional SSD or HDD further down the line if I need the extra space?
