Spec me a new build

So I was planning on doing a build around last Christmas, and before that, this time last year. Due to other commitments though, it never happened.

But now everything is sweet again, and I reckon I can do it. I need CPU, mobo and RAM, and have about £600 to spend. I haven't really looked into current hardware, but is it all about i7 nowadays, or can I still get away with the previous wave of technology?
