Currently using a superhub, but not liking the performance. So, I want to switch it to modem mode and buy a separate router. It will be connected to about 4 ethernet devices, and likely abour 5 or more wireless devices. All support 802.11g, and my dad's new laptop supports 802.11n, but none support 802.11ac as far as I can tell.

Should I just save money and get one that is n and below compatible, or future proof a little (I'll be taking it with me next year when I get my own place hopefully) and get one that supports ac?

Budget ideally is £80 ish, currently looking at this one, probably alongside a custom firmware:

Thanks!

If you shop around you can often get an AC66U for just over £110, or an N66U for about £90. I'd definitely look at the latter, because it does offer superior wireless performance.

What other features do you need? If you are going to use it as a VPN server you'll want a dual core model (N/AC56U), otherwise the N/AC66U are fine.

Surely you mean former? the AC wireless is going to trump the N66U
