Hi All,

I am in need of some assistance with selecting a new Graphics card.

My current system is as follows,

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 bit
Intel Q9550 Quad @ 3.2Ghz
Asus P5N-D Mobo & Arctic Freezer 7 Heatsink
4GB DDR2 800
X-Fi Extreme Gamer Sound card
Hiper 630 M-Power PSU
eVGA 8800 Ultra Superclocked
Maxtor 120BG HDD x 2
Optairic DVDRW
Dell 22" E2209 Monitor (1680x1050 native res)

My 8800 has done me well (2yrs), still going strong, but think its time for a change. Newer games are starting to 'splutter' on max detail and upcoming games titles (First Person Shooters mainly) look like they need a beefier card.

Thanks all.

Hi,

For that rig I recommedn one of the 5850's from ATI. DX11, not so pricy as its bigger brother, with most of the power.

Cheers

Von

I would go for a 5770 since you gaming at 1650x1080 and if you do plan to upgrade monitor just add a 2nd 5770.

5850 with a HP LP2475w in that case then and sell the Dell monitor

or

i7 920, An Asus P6T socket 1366 board, 6gb 1333mhz+ ddr3 tri channel ram and a 5850.

Both will be £50 or so over £600 but that's what i would go for anyway.

Otherwise 5850 and save the cash for something else since your cpu is pretty fine anyway.

Ok, Thanks for the quick replies, amazing.

At what point would a see a bottleneck between cpu and gfx card?

What about the 5870? to much 'power' for my quad/rig?

Need the card to last 2-3 years.I like to get the max out of it.

A 5870 vapor X would be great, connected to a 24" screen with plenty of power left in reserve. My 5870 is great even on my 2560*1600 30" Dell!

£600 over 2 years?
Spend £200 now, then £400 in a year/yearhalf time for a platform change.

<in the voice of Veruca Salt>

I have got £600 now/today to spend on a gfx card and maybe other components.

I want it to be as futureproof as I can get it.

I want my current and future games i.e BFBC2 to run at maximum detail where possible with a steady/constant smooth gameplay.

I'm not into benchmark scores.....

I dont know what my Budget will be in 6 months/ 1 year/ 2 years. I'm married with 4 kids, Mortgaged, and doing the usual 'Walk of life' stuff. I might have won the Lottery or I might have gone Bankrupt. Who knows.:D

Hope that helps.

Well with that budget you might go bankrupt! :D

Seriously a 5870 is the card for you.

Its one of those 'Out of the Blue Un-Budgeted Extra' moments.:D

What if I said i'm looking at the 5970? and upgrade my CPU/Mobo+RAM when money permits? Am I going mad thinking that?

The 5970 will last me a few years without worrying about performance, would'nt it? Or will I see no difference in the Games as my current rig is not up to the task?

Or do I go down the 'change CPU/Mobo/Ram first' worry about the card later scenario.

Or should I change a bit of everything?

When a Middle aged, computer iliterate like myself starts to think about upgrading, its like a small child in a sweet shop.;)

Sod it, wheres my sons Xbox!!!

Its going to be a long night methinks.

Unless your going to upgrade you monitor to something like a 30" monitor or use multiple monitors i don't see you needing more than a 5870. Most games won't be pushing the hardware as much untill the next generation of consoles arrive.

I'd put the rest of the money towards a solid state drive for my OS but thats yet me.
