Heya all

Im looking to upgrade my older 7800GS AGP to a spanking new card that will run most games on max (so yes, im looking at an 8800GTS :P)

I have a 775Dual Vsta mobo, so i can run pcie also. My budget is £200-£250.

I play games at 1280x1024 res, and i play a lot of games such as oblivion, fear, far cry bf2 and more

So what would be a good card for me to buy?
 
Any 8800GTS within the budget, there is very little difference between them as they are all built to the reference design - all that differs normally is the cooler, the bundle or the price and in the absence of any real differentiating factors I'd go with the lowest priced option. :)
 
are the Abit IL9 pro boards any good? I cant seem to find any reviews/benchmarks for them

It seems cheap, and i dont want to get a cheapy mobo that will throttle my gpu!
 
I decided to buy an S3 mobo aswell as an EVGA Suportclocked 8800GTS 320 (maybe a KO version, not sure yet)

One last question though...will an Atrix 650w be powerful enough to run the 8800gts, e6300(overclocked) and a hdd, and dvd drive? i think it has 29A on the 12v rail, is that a bit too low?

Please help! So close to buying! :)
 
the 8800gts is complete overkill, at 1280x1024 a x1950pro should give you top quality and high aa/af levels with more than needed framerate. the 8800gts will just make most games go at 120fps instead of 70fps. waste of cash. the 8800gts has enough juice to run any game at 1920x1200 with aa on, the 320mb version lacks the memory to do that but the core can. why buy a card twice the cost almost to run at a resolution that will only use half the cards power.

if you do go for a 8800gts a 650w psu would be more than enough, though i have no idea about the brand of psu you've got.

29A! That's awesome!

And go for the 8800GTS, that way, you won't have to spend anything for a good few years, especially considering you run at 1280x1024 (like me). The 8800GTS has DX10 whereas the X1950 doesn't. I'd definately stretch the budget for an 8800 any day.

By 29A thats by combining the DC1 and DC2 ones, is that right? DC1 is 14, and DC2 is 15 (the psu also has a 6pin pcie power connector if that helps)

I wanna make sure before i buy as its a lot of cash for me to spend, which is again why i want an 8800GTS, then it will last me for much longer than a X1950pro would, and i know for a fact performs much better in games

It isn't quite as simple as a direct combination to get the total, you will in fact have slightly below 29A, at a rough guess without doing the calculation it is probably around 26A which is still more than enough for the 8800GTS. :)
