Whilst on my PC today (Playing CS:GO) my computer gave me a wonderful BSOD. Upon restarting i was confronted with this image :-

I've had this happen once before and knew instantly that my graphics card had crapped out on me.

I had a NVidia Gainward GTX580 3072Mb GDDR5.

Ultimately I'd be looking at getting an equivalent card rather than upgrading to the latest as spending cash on PC parts aren't my priority at the moment. I'm looking for a reasonable replacement as that card was bought April 2012 so not sure what the equivalent would be.

Any advice is welcomed :)

EDIT

I mainly use my PC for processing Photographs, a bit of CAD work and a bit of gaming as well if that helps.

there are a few options if you want another Nvidia card.

a 970 is 200 ish, or you can grab a 980Ti around 350 or you can wait a bit for a 1060 or go with a 1070.

there are some options on the AMD side as well, since you're not looking for top end stuff, they might have something reasonable a little bit cheaper.

I'd stay clear of second hand cards, those are always hit and miss and you might buy one cheaper only to see it die on you within a few weeks, so no point really.

Those are all rather more than he needs to spend - I'd be more looking at the possible price of a 470 or lower to be honest for the OPs stated goal. Even a 460 is likely to be comparable to GTX 580 and rather cheaper (Though I'd much rather the 470 as an option!). If buying right now unfortunately you've got last gen's lower tiers like the 950 & 960 which were underwhelming and a bit overpriced or AMDs equivalents which were a bit better but still not something I'd like to recommend right now.

I'd seriously consider second hand tbh.

Ideally I'd be looking towards a sub £200 card as I'm in the middle of getting a holiday to New York booked for October and dropping £2.5k isn't sitting too well with me on that front so any cash i can save for this would be welcomed!

Agree with you on the second hand card front though especially if its out of warranty.

On the other hand if you aren't fussed which brand then at around £200 the 390 is a better buy than a 970 right now.

If you can wait you could go with a 4GB RX 480 at the end of the month for ~ £180. There is also the RX 470 due any time now at ~£140 (4GB) or ~£160 (8GB)

So if second hands out the 970 is £200 with free shipping or the 4gb 480 are good choices , the 960 would match if not beat the 580 the 380 or 380x are also good choices.

If you can't wait then: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...ddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-290-ms.html

If you can, then a 4gb RX480 (or 470, whichever comes out faster).

I would also advise looking for 2nd hand deals, the fears are overrated imo and you can still pick up many with warranty still (especially Nvidia-wise, where you can get transferable warranty, e.g. EVGA).

This top one is looking like a contender. Just need to get something sorted so I'm not relying on the onboard graphics for everything. I do have an old 5770 that i could use in the meantime but it'll probably just sit and gather dust in the cupboard.

I'd stick the 5770 in and wait until the 470 is available if I was you. It'll also be worth seeing how cheap 480's and 1060/50's are in a month or so so it's definitely not the time to be spending this amount of money when you have a card that will manage over the short term.

I presume that when you do get a card you want it to last a few years and the card level you are considering is in the process of getting a refresh so try and wait as long as you can.

i would use your 5770, untill the end of the month, the 4Go 480(180£) and 470(150£) should be here by then, i wouldn't pick an older gen with news ones just arriving.

Please, please do not get a brand new 380/X now. The 4GB 480 was £180 when it was in stock and is substantially faster than the 380 series. Even the soon to be released 470 at less than £150 would be better than the 380X.

Bit of an odd one this. I've put the 5770 in and installed the software / removed the old NVidia stuff and when i go into windows its still asking me to reinstall / update the display driver and program?!?!
