So my attempt to upgrade my 780i rig has failed miserably and I'm seriously thinking of pulling the trigger on a new mobo/CPU/ram. I plan on salvaging some parts from my old rig, namely the case (Antec 900), cooler (Spire Thermax Eclipse II), hard drive, DVD writer and PSU (got a choice between a Corsair TX750 or a BeQuiet 600w). I also have an Asus GTX 570 DCII on the way.

But based on the little research I've done, this is what I'm thinking of buying:

1. Intel i5 2500k (this one is a no-brainer).

2. Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 (this one is a bit trickier. I can get this for around £100, seems like a good deal to me, but I don't know if I should be going for one of the UD3P or whatever models).

3. 8Gb (2x4Gb) G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3-1600 (I haven't a clue which ram to buy but I heard these were good for the money).

So how does that look to you? Anything else I should be getting instead?

This rig will mostly be for gaming but I'll also be using it for typical daily tasks (web browsing MS Office, etc). I would like for this to be compatible with the next gen of PCI-e 3.0 graphics cards, and I believe that Gigabyte motherboard does have at least one 3.0 slot. Socket 2011 would be nice, but I'm really not too bothered about that.

Any advice is appreciated :)

does the cooler you currently have come with mounting for 1156? if so then it'll work as 1156 and 1155 are the same in terms of the mounting holes on the motherboard. if the cooler isn't 1156 compatible then you'll need a new cooler.

ram wise would suggest going with low profile ram(I.e no fins) as the fins can interfer with the cooler.
