Hi guys I was looking for some advice, I have built my own PC`s in the past but I have been away from the scene for a few months so I was wondering if you guys could spec me a new rig that I can build for my bro, he wants to spend £600 - £700 max, he wants it for playing games such as the new AOE and other similar games, for downloading music and other stuff and also for his kids to use for the homework etc...

Thanks in advance

This is what I was thinking of getting

Case
Antec SLK3800BUK Black Quiet Midi Tower Case - 400W SmartPower PSU

M/Board
Asus M2N-E (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

CPU
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail

GFX Card
XFX GeForce 7600 GT XXX Edition 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

Memory
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-5400 TwinX (2x1GB)

DVD
NEC ND3550 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Silver) - OEM

What is the difference between socket AM2 & socket 939

im not overly sure on the main differences, but AM2 is the newest..and im not overly keen on them yet.. if it was me id go for a S939..but im not sure what everyone else thinks about that matter.

AM2 uses 940 pins instead of the 939 pins, its basically just AMD changing from DDR to DDR2, the performance increase between AM2 and 939 is very small.

Nah, get AM2. Its the new AMD Processor Socket, bringing DDR2 RAM compatibility. AMD have dropped production of Socket 939 chips to concentrate on AM2. Problem with the new baby is that many people expected a huge performance gain from 939 but that's not been the case yet. BUT, the new Socket hasn't dropped any performance. Besides the chips are at a real bargain right now :D

Anyhow...

Whats conroe

The new intel chip thats meant to be avaliable next month. By the looks of the benchmarks flooding in, it wipes the floor with anything AMD has to offer at the moment

its available now lol...OCUK have it...

it offers better performance but you have to know how to overclock to be able to run it at the levels everyone is speaking about...may not be suitable for beginnners...

Kinda scary..but i`ve ordered almost the identical! (see sig)
I should be builing it either 2mo or tues, and once it`s up i`ll post here on how it is/how it runs games etc. so if you can hold out the order till midweek, i can letya know just how good it is! :D

If the conroe is new then surely it will be too expensive
Not really. Price vs. Perfomance, e.g. £214.95 E6600 @ stock = £619.95 FX62 if not better, they are looking very good :)
