Hi, first post here so be gentle please?

I have around £700 to make myself a decent rig. I have a PS3 and Wii to game with so I dont need decent graphics in this thing.

However he spec must have...

At least 2GB of ram
2 x 500GB hard drives (I prefer Seagate although am open to suggestions)
Decent Power supply
Decent MDB for OCing the processor.

In regards to the processor, im not fussed if it is AMD x2 or C2D but would like to get the best I can out of it, so a decent MDB and ram is essential. Im quite happy to get a less speedy processor if it can be OC'd easily in my new rig. Also factor in aftermarket cooling too if you will.

I have some ideas on certain components alrerady but would like to get your views on what you may have so I can see what is compatible and what isn't.

Thanks in advance.
Simon

Just changed the spec slightly.

If the money is not sufficient can you explain why and how much I will need please? Im no newbie to making a computer but have been out of the game for too long to fully undertand all the options nowdays.

Your help is appreciated :)

I think this is a pretty decent build that will last a good while:

Without the peripherals, according to your budget, you could fit in the following:

E6600 Core2Duo
Gigabyte DS3P
G.Skill 2GB DDR2 PK PC2-6400 OR GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency
2x Seagate 500GB
Antec Solo Case + Antec TruePower 550W PSU (IF YOU NEED CASE)
7600GT

£774 including delivery+VAT. Could probably reduce it by going for a little less powerful PSU.

personally I would go for something on these lines

would need to go slightly over budjet to get a decent cpu cooler aswell for overclock

Sorry guys, should have been more consise...

I already have keyboard, mouse, monitor, OS. BU tneed the following...

Case, mbd, processor, ram, 2 x 500GB hard drives, Pioneer 111D dvd writer and some form of graphics card.

Its not a rig for gaming. Will be encoding, video editing, batch file conversions, some graphics work etc.

As i said, im quite happy to get a slower processor and decent ram and OC the thing :)

Hope this helps.

Cheers

I went ahead and did one with a 8800GTS and an SLi mobo.

It's overbudget but it's really the hard disks that put it over the edge. If it were me I'd get a 320 GiB or two then when tyhose were full buy more as they'll be cheaper by then.

nVidia's price cuts will come soon, as will ATi's DX10 offering so it might be worth it to wait a couple weks for it all to pan out. You could get much better kit for the same price.

Do I really need a £220 graphics card (or a £120 card for that matter) If I am not gaming at all? What benefit does this kind of card have over say a £60 card?

Cheers

Ah, I missed that. A fancy GPU won't help at all if you're not doing 3D work.

None basically. The 7600GT is more than enough for what you are wanting to do.

OK so thats the Gfx sorted out.

Now the processor and motherboard. Am I better off getting a E6600 and a P5B or a 6300 and a decent OC'ing board like the DS3P / DS4 / P5B / whaterver?

I would go for the DS3 and the E6300, cause there isn't much point in getting an SLi or Crossfire board if your not going to use it. Or you could get the E4300 and some cheap ram and overclock it to 3GHz easily.

The P5N-E costs less than a DS3P and the same as a DS3. I'd take it over a DS3 any day and I have two DS3s. ;)

Ok so I have the following so far thanks to you guys...

Asus P5N-E
C2D E6300
7600GT 256 DDR3

Right now I need some decent memory...

Everyone in this thread has spec'd the OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series memory.

Is this recommended for taking the E6300 up to 3Ghz then? Is there better memory for a similar price?

Cheers
Simon

That memory will get the E6300 up to 3GHz no problem. Im not sure if there is any cheaper one rated PC6400 (800mhz).
