Spec me a new rear wheel

So today, I get home from work. Heard a nice hissing noise emerging from the rear wheel. Obviously a puncture. Turned bike upside down to just let the air continue to dissipate from wheel. Tyre then began to shrink. Next thing I know, I hear a sharp PANG and two spokes came loose. Wheel bent to where it cannot be turned. So took it to bike shop who said cos the rim is now bent, the wheel cannot be true anymore.

So, with that in mind. Anyone able to spec/recommend a 700c rear wheel for a hybrid that can take a 9 cassette freewheel and uses a disc brake, please? Oh and needs to have quick release as well.

Evans Cycles quoted me £79 as the cheapest they got. Looking on Fleabay and I could get one for around £35-£50.

At least this will give me time to clean the bike rigorously now that I am armed with both Morgan Blue chain cleaner and Scottoiler FS 365.

Thanks in advance. :)

How old is the wheel?
If it's not too old, it might be worth getting a second opinion from another shop. Spokes put a lot of tension on the rim and when that tension is lost from one side through a broken spoke, it'll naturally put a large wobble in the rim (enough that it doesnt turn through the brakes).

PlanetX are quite good for cheap wheels. They have a few different sets (front+rear) for £79.

I've had the bike since Oct 2015. To be fair in the last several months, I have had a number of spokes replaced on the bike. So maybe this was its way of saying it had enough.

I'll take a look at PlanetX. Thank you.

Thanks guys. I ended up buying the following from CRC:

Schwalbe Marathon GT 365 (700c x 38c) x2
Shimano RX010 Disc Road Rear Wheel (700c)
Vittoria Rim Tape (18mm)
Schwalbe Road Tube (40mm Schrader valve 28-45c)

I thought I might as well get new tyres as the current ones (bought for a tenner each several months ago) are starting to show wear and tear. All arriving tomorrow. To answer your question Roady: I don't actually know what the 'value' of my broken wheel was, but I know it had to be of a cheap variety as it came with the bike.

I have those wheels on my cyclocross bike. I like them, been going strong for a few years now.
Be aware of the disc rotor mount though, that wheel has a centrelock fitting which is less common and not compatible with the 6-bolt rotors.

Really? Dang it! And the disc I have is a 6-bolt one. Great. Does this mean I have to buy a new disc itself as well? Nothing is ever simple. :(

Yep, you'll need a new disc. You can get adapters to fit your 6bolt rotor to it but they are usually just as expensive as a new rotor anyway. Should be <£15 for a new one. It's best to get new pads at the same time as a new rotor as well though. superstar are good for pads.

Yeah I just bought one from Evans and picked it up about 45mins ago. I had a feeling new pads would be needed as well. I'll have a look at what my current bike (Voodoo Marasa) has.

EDIT: Just bought two pairs of Tektro Auriga A10.11 brake pads as these are what my bike currently has. Just took out the rear ones and boy they have indeed wear down! The new ones are sintered. Hopefully they will be here by Friday!

I'm such an idiot! The wheel I bought from CRC is going to be returned, because I completely forgot I had a wheelset on my watchlist on Ebay. Only £80 for both wheels, but they come with rim tape, QR skewers and two extra spokes supplied! They should be arriving tomorrow. So I am also returning the center lock disc rotor to Evans Cycles. What a hassle it's been just getting a new wheel for the bike. Who knew so much more was involved.

That being said, my new Schwalbe GT 365 tires arrived today. And they look amazing! Feel robust as well.

Haha, what a faff! Sounds like you've got it sorted though!

Just imagine the future, something like pads mounted on the frame (away from wheel) and them 'rubbing' the rim rather than needing rotors! Incredible, so much easier! ;)

Finger's crossed I have got it all sorted finally! I am just looking forward to putting the bike back together so I can get back on it! Lol.

Finally! Bike is all back together now. Had trouble with the new brake pads, cos I could not remove the brakes themselves to install the new ones. So ended up buying a whole new set of brakes. Got the Clarks M2 set that comes with rotors, levers and pads/calipers. All for just over £40 from Amazon.

Wheels looking good with new inner tubes, rim tapes and tires. Brakes installed fine now. Bike looks as good as new. Just letting it settle for now before I lube the chain with wet oil and then will take it fora spin either today or tomorrow to see how it feels.

But flipping heck! What a faff on it's been! And all because one wheel got bent from two spokes coming off. Still, I have new parts now and I guess they were needed.

Thanks for all your input on this guys. I will post a pic of the bike soon! :)

As promised, a few pics of my bike since I gave it new parts over the weekend. Rode it out yesterday and was sure to put it through its paces. So much so, the tires got an insane amount of mud on them. But riding to and from work today and they were really gripping the road really well. Overall, I have to say I am proud with putting it back together with all the new parts. Let's just hope it doesn't fall apart in a few days time! Lol.
