Spec me a new rig + help me overclock!

I'm looking at building my new system soon as my current system is looking a little outdated:
  1. AMD 3800+ Venice single
  2. 2GB Mushkin DDR
  3. ECS KN1 Extreme mobo
  4. 7900GT
  5. 200GB Seagate (data), 80gb (Windows + bits and bobs)

The new system will be used for media work (photo editing, video encoding, music, MSN, Internet) so I would like 2GB of ram and a dual core but I'm not sure whether to go AMD X2 or C2D (I'm not comfortable with overclocking) Budget wise I'm not sure but I should imagine around the £400-500 mark :) (if poss) All I need is:
  1. New Mobo
  2. New CPU
  3. New Ram
  4. New PSU (Pref modular)
  5. New Case (Pref a midi tower is poss)
Thanks for any help, I don't have a clue about what ram to use when it comes to DDR2 :o

How about:-

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - OEM £213.84
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £82.24

A bit over I'm afraid, but you weren't firm on the budget so I'd thought I'd have a go.

This should be good for about 2.8ghz on air, you might need to get a better CPU cooler but it is within budget. :)

How olds the Mushkin and will you be selling it?

The mushkin is only a few months old, never overclocked :) Will likely sell at a later date :D I like the specs semi pro, is overclocking C2d easy? Sorry for brief post I'm on PDA

Overclocking is pretty easy as I understand it, to get to 2.8ghz you need to push the FSB up to 400mhz (easy with that Ram as it is in specification) and the 7x multiplier of the CPU takes care of the rest. There is a lot more detailed information in the overclocking sub-forum though, I'm just giving the brief outline of how it would work. :)

Hell yea. It pretty damn easy, to do a moderate overclock at least. You have to have a bit of time and read around these forums but for me it turned out to be easier than I expected.
Pushing the boundaries is another thing...

This is exactly what I would have suggested, though would rather have some GeiL RAM. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-058-GL

Looks good.

I think I will go for Semi-Pros specs, cheers for the spec :D Now I just have to wait for the cash to come through (emergency tax  ) Is the OcUk ram ok? I've always been told to avoid that kind of ram (odd pairs, reliability)? I will try the overclock, as long as I don't fry anything :p

The Ram is paired so is guaranteed to run at PC6400 speeds with the timings advertised as a minimum, it may work better than that but that is at least your minimum guarantee. It is just generic Ram really, maybe take a quick look in the Memory sub-forum to see what users experiences are of it.

It's OK for the price, just don't expect to get a decent overclock out of it if ever you might try.

I wont be overclocking any further than stated above (FSB to 400Mhz) I mean the price gap between that and then GeIL is pretty steep so I'll try my luck with the generic :) Are the timings for that ram ok?

Ok I've worked out my budget to be around £590 :) Shall I get better ram, if so which brand? I was also thinking a better CPU cooler, if so any recommendations? :)

As stated earlier, the GeiL is nice, as is the equivalent G.Skill.

The Scythe Ninja is an excellent HSF.

I think I'll look at the G.Skill as I've used them before with no problems. Is the Scythe any better than the Tuniq tower (I've been looking at other threads) I'm hoping that when I build this system in late February that I can overclock the e6300 to 2.8/3ghz without noise :)
