Ok, i'm looking for a new router to replace my aging Netgear dg834g.
I've had this router since not long after it was released, so i had to suffer an awful lot of firmware updates before it worked properly. Recently I've been having a problem where it won't assign ip addresses to certain wireless pcs, at one point i had 3 laptops with exactly the same wireless card and only one would work, I've tried everything and nothing will get them to work, even manually setting ip addresses. Something is up with the dhcp i think.
On one laptop the internal card won't work but a plug in one will, yet i have another laptop with the same internal card and that does work, its very strange.
Good things that I've liked about this router are the firewall, which seems to have reduced virii and trojans to almost nothing compared to before the router, and its reliability when it works. Its been on a lot and has lasted well.
I need your help because i haven't really been keeping up with router technology, particularly the wireless side of things, and i also have no idea what's good and what's bad at the moment.
Current network:
-3 gigabit desktops
-1 non gigabit desktop, which may be upgraded to gigabit
-2 laptops with 802.11g
-Media center currently connected with a long wire, will either be gigabit wired or will use a 802.11g card i have or will be upgraded to a faster wireless standard.
Plus an extra laptop, desktop or two every so often.
Currently i have an extra 5 port hub connected to the router. Its not gigabit.
Requirements:
-Adsl 1 and 2 modem.
-Wireless g and something faster, not sure what... pre n?
-Gigabit hub? Or is it cheaper to get that separately?
-Total price (inc gigabit hub if thats bought separately) <£120.
-Suitable for 24/7 operation
-Good security, good hardware firewall
Thats about it i think. So what sort of things should i be looking at?
Thanks
