Spec me a new SATA controller card

Hi all

What I need is a PCI 4 port SATA II controller card that can be used in a NON-Raid configuration.

I fancied the Adaptec 1420 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CC-022-AD&groupid=701&catid=49&subcat=424 but no one seems to be able to confirm that all four ports can be used independantly.

Any suggestions?

Well it says it supports JBOD in the spec. I also need a 4 port card to use for non raid but cant find any cheap ones, £64 seems a bit much IMO. So I am going for a 2 port lycom one for £15.

Every RAID card I've used was able to use the HDs in a non RAID configuration.
I suspect the Adaptec card is the same.

Why on earth would you pay for an expensive RAID card if you don't need RAID?
A 4-port Sil3114 based card costs £10-15.

I've got one. Have a look at this:

The reason I've been trying to get it confirmed it can be used in NON-raid mode before I hand over the dosh is because of what was written about the XFX REVO 64 SPU 3 Port SATA Raid Card on another website (Which I'm not alowed to post because of forum rules)

This was one of the first cheap cards I looked at, and if you scroll to the bottom someone has asked if the ports can be used NON-Raid. Surprisingly only one can.

And... before anyone suggests it, a new MOBO is out of the question

I'd edit that post and remove the competitor before a Don sees it and suspends you. Read the FAQ if you're unsure of the rules.

At then end of the day it was only and example of why NOT to buy one of their cards. But I don't suppose OCUK would see it like that.

If your not using RAID get a cheap VT6421A card from ebay. I did and I only paid £6

works just as well as anothing else.

Well..that's another story

I was trying to steer clear of VIA because the machine the SATA card will be in has a Geovision 1240 CCTV card in it. Geovision hardware is a bit stroppy when it comes to certain VIA chips.

However for the sake of £6 I might give it a go.

I found a 4 port one (2 external SATA, not e-SATA ports), for £0.99p lol. Its got a silicon chipset - Sil3132

I just found another one, PCI-E x1, 4 port, 2 internal sata and 2 external (not e-sata ports) for £9 - although its cost me £6 in postage but cheaper than anywhere else

I wish ocuk stocked a wider range of controller cards!

Just look for sil3114, it's not hard.
