Hey all

Basically I've been wanting to upgrdae for around 2 years now and finally have decided to get round to it!

My budget is around £400 (yes i know quite low!) and it needs to include: Motherboard, RAM, VGA & CPU :)

Help ? :p

/edit: I prefer Intel & ATi but will settle for AMD due to price! Thanks

Not bad :)

To the OP, I would recommend going with intel if possible this time around.

E6300 is about 120 or so.

You didnt mention if you game or not, if you dont just get any old GFX card you want.

If you do game something like:

E6300
Asrock PCIE motherboard (around 50)
1GB DDR 2 ram 80
X1950 Pro 256 (around 130)

Which is around your budget. You wont be able to overclock like crazy, but you wont be to bad :)

I have linked to a few parts, to help you.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-004-AK motherboard

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-126-IN CPU

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-134-SP GPU

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-011-OK RAM

If you do NOT game, I would recommend a different setup though,

Spend 30 on the GFX, and let the motherboard/ram soak up the extra

Go for:

E6300
Gigabyte DS3 motherboard http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-061-GI
6200 PCIE 128MB http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-071-MS
2GB OCUK 6400 DDR2 RAM http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-010-OK

Around 400 too.

I game a lot actually but I've been thinking about an Xbox.. still I'd like a decent VGA (kinda like the 1950PRO).. Thanks for the replies btw !

What I definately don't need is SLi / Crossfire as I am not planning on getting 2xGFx cards

If I were to stretch a little, say 500, would it make much difference?

Take this spec:

E6300
Gigabyte DS3 motherboard http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...rodid=MB-061-GI
2GB OCUK 6400 DDR2 RAM http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...rodid=MY-010-OK

And nuke the 6200, then replace with the X1950 PRO.

This will be about your budget.

So it will be:

DS3 Gigabyte
2GB DDR2 OCuk RAM
X1950 PRO 256MB ATI
Intel Conroe E6300

Overclock the CPU (which the DS3 is perfect for) and the X1950 is a little better performing than an X1800XT, and the 1950 can be clocked nicely too.

How are the gigabyte mainboards? Had one ages ago and it sucked... have they gotten better?

How does everyone see the build above? Am I better off getting 2gb OCUK Ram or 1gb branded RAM?

Thanks all!

Here we are mate, its over budget but you need to get 2gb of ram. The 1950 pro is a better graphics card but decided to go with the 7900gs as 2gb of ram is more important at taking away stuttering....etc. ;)

The S3 is the same as the DS3 and the OcUK ram is very good and just as good as branded basically and will allow
you to overclock. The retail cooler is not half bad aswell!

OcUK 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
(£146.86)

Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
(£124.54)

Gigabyte GA_965P_S3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
(£88.11)

Gainward BLISS GeForce 7900 GS "Golden Sample" SILENT 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
(£116.31)

Sub Total : £404.96
Total : £485.52

My spec had 2GB of ram with it, and the X1950 :/

As for the ram, quite a few people have been using the OCUK stuff, and not reported any problems as far as I have seen. And people on this board are pretty vocal. If you do have problems you can RMA it anyway.

Gigabyte are very good now. Google DS3 reviews if you want confirmation, literally everyone is raving about them, they are awesome for overclocking too, and very stable.
