Spec me a new wireless router - ideally Draft-N...

Looking to replace the flaky wireless router duties of my otherwise excellent Freecom FSG-3 WLAN 250GB.......the FSG will then be relegated to Switch status.....

So, ideally looking for a model with Draft-N capability (my new laptop has this !!) for future-proofing a little

So, seems Belkin, Linksys, Netgear and D-Link all have pretty spangly models available through the Purple Shirts, what's the model to go for ? Don't really need the modem side, as current;y on Cable, although would consider if the price is not too wildly different for further future-proofing

Any good reviews etc. ? I noticed that one of the newest D-Link models has Gigabit Routing which is mighty tempting......

I have just bought the Netgear DG834N 270Mbps RangeMax NEXT Wireless ADSL2+ Modem/Router

easy as anything to setup and the home page is easy to navigate around.

i cannot really fault it but then i have only had it for 2 days. I'm just now looking for 64 bit drivers for the WN121T adapter so i can connect at 270mps like everyone else

Obviously don't buy an ADSL router if you have a cable connection as it simply will not work. There is a version of the DG834N available for cable users, its the WNR854T and has a 5-port gigabit ethernet switch built in.

I just bought one too but I am finding the wireless connection very tempermental. I have to position the 834N right in the middle of the spare room floor or else it drops the connection constantly. Not what I was expecting. Oh, it's just dropped it again - not pleased.

I keep pinging it and get pings ranging from 1ms to 2000ms or timeouts all the time. The signal strength however is apparently "Excellent" according to Vista.

My DLink WAP was steady as a rock and never gave me any trouble. I suspect the internal antenna might be the root of this. My DLink WAP had an adjustable external one.

I need to fiddle a bit more and try and find a suitable location

Thanks for the comments, guys - got myself a DLink DIR-655 today !

Gonna have a crack at setting it up later (after the wife has gone to bed ) as cable connection provisioning et al can be stressful ....and then have to figure out how to get my FSG to still function as a http and ftp server from behind the DLink eek as I am no networking guru.......

Will post back with findings.......any advice on the above connectivity welcome

Well, the DLink is pretty darn fine......was a doddle to set up and I now have a Gigabit home network with 270mbps wireless on tap

Now to sort out the http/ftp servers with my sites etc. on - they are sat on my FSG3-WLAN device, which used to also be my router, and accessed via DYNDNS thingy......how do I set up my new Dlink to allow these sites to still be viewed/accessed ? Is this something to do with port-forwarding ? Or does the DYNDNS stuff have to be running on the DLink now, and not the FSG ?
