Spec me.... a parking area

Imprinted concerete can look nice

Roughly twice the price of block paving however and does need resealing every couple of years to stop the concrete cracking

and of course if your car drops oil or some other stain, you can just remove the offending part of the driveway as its all one big piece.

Blockpaving however has a nasty tendency to grow weeds and look shabby after 5 / 10 years as the colour of the blocks fades

Alternatives are of course gravel that we have already mentioned or just normal concrete or Asphalt which are obviously cheaper than both.
That does look quite nice, guessing it can be done in other shades too? I like the idea of a bit of colour like the red bricks.

Gravel appeals from a cost perspective - shouldnt cost more than a few hundred to put the right weed membrane down and chuck some gravel on top, but I suspect a lot of it would end up on the road pretty quickly!
Gravel is the best by far as long as some **** dont spray ot all over the grass.

I got this rake thing i use to get gravel off the grass, its very good. My partner was going to go for blue gravel, but we talked him out of it.

Plus that crunching noise, all jokes aside, it is a very pleasing noise.
The only grass within 100 yards is the weeds caused by that ******* tree

That can look quite good if done right. Can't just do the whole driveway with the blue stuff though.

I'd be still be skeptical to do it on a shared drive. Just takes one ****er to do a wheel spin and there stones flying into everyones cars.

It was Smurf blue, we talked him out of it.

yeah google imprinted concrete

you can have pretty much any shade or colour you want

Pay for it though :/

We got a quote for 6k for our driveway. Block paving was 3k.

I dont think it would even be possible to do that without having a crash in this area!

Ouch, how big is your driveway in relation do that space do you think?

Getting rid of the tree and base will be the best part of a grand too as the roots need to come out and the hole filled with.....something... to stop it from sinking/rutting

A few bob on gravel leaves us some spare to spend on fencing, posts etc.

My immediate inclination would be to put 4 bollards along the back, but theres no way to stop Mr Neighbour parking his van across all 4 spaces

Are you seriously going to pay a grand to get rid of that tree?

Not quite, I say "best part of a grand", but IIRC the quote was a grand to remove it and the base, make the ground solid, kill the weeds, put a membrane down and cover it with cheap gravel. So the tree part was probably closer to £500 in fairness.

Just chopping it down was only £100, it's the base that makes it a bit of a pig

Just cut it flush with the ground and worry about the rest in 5 years when you have sold the flat.

You reckon that'll work?

I've only had one company look at it so far, so others may say different - will contact more for better quotes when I can figure out where to put the cars

Edit - Aha, found the email:

Hi Iain,
The guys have reported back having visited your property over the weekend. I can confirm that the Willow you have growing in the courtyard is most likely to be suffering from root compaction now it has semi matured which has lead to some die back in the crown.
The first option should you wish to retain the tree is to remove the dead branches however this could be an ongoing process as more dies out.
You could remove the tree and plant something more suitable for a confined space which we could recommend to you.
Cost to prune the branches would be in the region of £50 which is more of a call out charge.
Cost to remove would be in the region of £150.
With regards the gravel area, I would suggest all the weeds are sprayed off using an industrial glyphosphate and then lay a weed membrane suitable to take vehicles and then re gravel.
Cost will vary depending on your selection of gravel, the cheapest Flint gravels start at around £40 per tonne and I'd suggest a covering of 3-4 inches. The fabric price also varies depending on quality.
I would estimate as a guideline to allow around £500 to reinstate this area using a cheaper style gravel and reasonable fabric with the labour involved and ground preperations.

And about the base:

Hi Again Iain,
The cost to do that will put it up as we'd probably need to use a mini digger and as a registered company we have to pay to dispose of the waste. Also you'd be advised to put a flexible foundation in using compacted scalpings at 6 inches under the fabric and gravel or you would end up with issues such as car tyres making ruts.
I would estimate that is a £350 job in itself.

Its a parking space, the condition of it will have zero effect on the value of the property, its the parking space that is important, not the condition of the floor you park on.

Spend the minimum you need to to create more room.

Forget that flowery email, no one is more lazy than me, its not hard to do it yourself, iv removed many trees round my house, by fire, chainsaw and 4 wheel drive, get stuck in and it cost you 50 quid for a days chain saw hire and some petrol.
