Friend is looking to upgrade in time for Bf3

Budget is £1000 or under.

Needs everything Bar PSU as he is using a 950w corsair model.

i put something together myself but the experts here will know better :D

thanks :)

a grand and no one to give opinions :O.. bloooody helll the forums getting slow :P
wow, surprised this one was missed.

however, i do have a long list of questions which will help me work out what can be recycled from his old PC (i have no idea how good or bad it is). most of which can be answered by taking a 30 second look inside the PC or by downloading a program called CPU-Z

- what case does he have
- what socket is the motherboard? (AM3, 775, 1366, etc)
- what cooler does he have, and does he have the brackets that allow him to mount it to a 1156 socket motherboard, or a 775 socket motherboard?
(i'm asking because socket 1155 and socket 1156 share mounting brackets, and asrock motherboards have additional mounting holes for socket 775 motherboards)
- what RAM does he have?
- are his HDD's and DVD drives IDE (big ribbon cable) or SATA (small flat cable)

sorry to ask so many questions but i figure theres no point in spending money on, say, a new DVD drive only to find it performs no differently to his current one

*edit*
sorry, another one. thought of it after seeing olivers builds. does he need a new monitor, mouse, speakers, keyboard, OS, or anything like that, or is it just the tower and whats inside that needs upgrading?

Yeah, salvage as much as possible. £50 can make a difference. Better case, a CPU cooler, more RAM, surround headphones / speakers, maybe even better GPU, although the 570 is at the limit of 'reasonable money'.

Does he want a nice looking case or something just functional with more performance? And for SSD, imo he would spend his money better getting a top GPU and motherboard.

Yeahno worries about the questions..
He wants everything new, he's using a q6600 ATM but doesn't want to overclock, gtx275,

Wants a new case he was looking at antecedent 1200, new gfx, new hdd, possible ssd, prefers nvidia gfx, CPU cooler and he also wants more than 4gb ram, preferably 12 or 16 .. He's probably fine with 8 to start with an he can add more later on

TBH he wants the everything and kitchen sink, and with the budget, he'll have to compromise somewhere. If he want a gaming machine, he should REALLY consider not getting a SSD now and getting one later.

If he wants to max BF3, with all the modern gadgets (128GB SSD, CPU cooler...), he'll have to spend a little more.

Secondly, we don't really know what card will max BF3 at 1080p. I would say little difference between a 6950 and a 570 in that regard, however we wont know for sure until the game is out.

Personally, I don't like the Antic 1200 (see what I did there?). IMO there are better looking, better functioning, quieter cases.

I know I don't like the 1200 either to be fair, but that's the kind of case he chose, an ssd isn't essentially but nice if you can fit it in, I specced a 570 myself for his build but like I said just wants a nice upgrade from his q6600, i5 2500k, 1tb hdd, more than 4gb ram, Etc etc

ah thats a shame. Q6600 generally means DDR2 RAM so theres no recycling there

the antique 1200 (yay, more bad antec puns) isnt that great a case, but it might be better than what i'd be recommending him for a £1000 budget all in.
