I have a decent 22" widescreen monitor and an ageing Laptop.
What spec. should I look for if I wish to build a decently fast desktop, primarily for editing home video and playing around with photoshop?
Obviously, firewire is essential, but I'm interested in what processor/RAM/Graphics card (don't need awesome 3d)/O\S/etc. would offer decent performance, and what kind of price I should be thinking of.
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks,

Processor: Intel Q6600
RAM: the cheapest 4 GiB PC2-6400C5 kit you can find
Graphics: Any would do. Perhaps an ATI 2600 Pro.

Think in the neighborhood of 550 quid for a complete rig.

You'll need a 64-bit OS, be it XP-64, Vista (Home Premium 64-bit), or something else. XP-64 has gotten really expensive so if you want to go the Windows route your best bet is Vista Home Premium 64.

The disk is up to you and your storage needs. With some video programs you can get a nice performance increase by keeping the OS and program files on one disk and the project files on another. Would a pair of Seagate 7200.10 250 GB disks meet your needs? It'd be a very fast arrangement. If you need more space for project files you might get one of the above Seagates for the OS and a WD AAKS 500 BG drive for the projects.

Thanks for that, really appreciate your kindness in sharing your knowledge; that's what the internet is all about!
