If you want something with a good story, how about Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. Its not really a puzzle game, as its mostly story driven.

Agree, definitely the best recent game not listed in the original post. The add-on is excellent too. First person Max Payne basically, but with some genuinely scary stuff too (especially the add-on) and a story I enjoyed (once I got it).

Somethine else I really enjoyed - GRAW (and soon GRAW 2).

It you want some real classy games have a look at System Shock 2 and the first two Thief games.
