Take away the keyboard / mouse and the Vista if he doesn't need them.

If you change other bits even the 8800GTX can fit into the budget.

Great thanks for that Steve258

i take it that the board will be good for bumping up the speed on the cpu,
will Vista be a pain to install being new and all that with the selected hardware?

EDIT: i forgot to ask would the 640meg GTS be worth getting, BFG are good arn't they?

If you're thinking about overclocking and want the higher end 8800 cards, how about the following? A little over budget, I know.

OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK)

Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-620HXUK)
£84.99 (£99.86)

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit Edition DVD - OEM - 1Pk

Yes both DS3 and P5B-E / P5B-Deluxe are very good overclockers.

Not sure about Vista but if he already has a copy of XP then I'd stick with it, if he needs a new OS anyway then go for Vista.

Well i think his son might have his old pc so he will need a new OS,
is it worth going for the BFG GTS 320 and higher clocked version because of the warranty?,
i'll be building this so thats why i thought id ask on here.
want to make sure its all gonna without out any incompatabilty issues ;)

Edit: i need to add an X-Fi sc to the list nearly forgot

Which X-Fi is he going for? if it's the extreme music then it's easy; drop the keyboard / mouse and change the mobo to a DS3 and you can fit an X-Fi into the budget.

As for Vista compatibility I wouldn't imagine there will be any issue except that you will need to download most of the drivers for 64bit Vista yourself from manufacturers websites.

i would say the X-fi music and the Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775)
will do nicely thanks for your help and Jameslee.

Cheers Ninja

Here's what I would get with £1000 for the given requirements:

Left out OC, if your going for Vista get the Ultimate OEM edition :)

Here is what I am currently recommending to people as a great full system for £1000

With the cash you save by not needing a monitor or peripherals, I would upgrade the case to an Antec P180, the HDD to a 500GB Seagate, and then maybe add a second 2GB RAM kit.

well this was what was ordered:
