My bro is looking for a new pc. The main things he doesnt like about his existing laptop are it being slow to load etc. He would also like to use it for photoshop etc.
- The machine isn't going to be used for much gaming, but a half decent cheap one wouldnt hurt (4850 kinda thing).

Max budget i would say is like £600, but i guess the cheaper the better.. My guess is the focus of this would be decent, fast hard drives (maybe solid state?).. I'm not too clued up on how demanding photoshop is, and what kind of processor i should be looking at, anyways would appreciate any thoughts..(he's not looking for the fastest machine on earth, just fast loading times, reliable etc)- also a half decent card is kinda needed since his monitor is 1920x1200, he would also like a digital sound output..

When he says photoshop, does he mean editing and cropping the odd picture or actual heavy design work?

If its just surfing, watching movies, basic photoshop then we can get some pretty cheap specs for you.

He doesnt need a monitor, but yes the pc does need to come with an OS aka win7...

I'm not entirely sure what he means by photoshop, i have seen him using it with his tablet, and he does like to use it for art etc as a hobby i think.- I wouldn't call it heavy design work though ( he's been using a 3-4 year old at-the-time £500 dell laptop).- Yeh just surfing, using multiple broswers at the same time etc.. I think he just wants it to be fast at what it does...- a gaming rig isnt really neccesary here...

He's already got a ps3, so he plans on using that a a kind of media server..

Yeah, makes sense, quite often you'll get people saying Photoshop\Video Editing when all they actually do is resize pics and make a video start in a different place. The guy above me knows his stuff, go with him!

slight re-think.

almost the same as above, but

win7

and ditched the graphics card for a motherboard with built in graphics, it also has sata and usb3.0

thanks v much for that lineup.. i'l pass on the specs to him and see what he recons.... I did mention a media server size type pc and he seemed reasonably interested (although i'l have to look into that a bit more, and with the ps3, im not sure of any need)...

Whats the lifetime of that SSD like?- i'm still a bit sceptical of them after hearing mixed reviews...

Also any idea when that asus motherboard is likely to come back in stock?/any alternatives... for him theres no particular rush to get the PC at the moment, but i go to uni on the 25th and he wouldn't neccersarily be able to put one together...
