Hey,

I'm looking at building a new PC mainly for work use to replace my current PC which is a Dell XPS 8100.

Here is the specs of my current PC :
pc-specs.jpg

My job : Web developer.
Tools : VMware, eclipse, aptana, photoshop, fireworks (adobe products) etc.

I don't really do any video editing.

I'm looking for an Intel based PC.

I already have a new power supply (a week old), it's a Corsair HX 750w, I don't plan on overclocking and I already have windows 8 64bit pro.

I already have storage hard drives and will use the DVD drive out my current PC.

My Budget is £800

The only thing I have in mind is the case.

Case : Fractal Design Define R4 (£80)

Thanks for any help/advice given.

Paul

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-3820 3.60GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - Retail with Dead Space 3 PC Game £249.95
1 x Gigabyte X79-UD3 Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard £179.99
1 x Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7850 OC Windforce 2X 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with Tomb Raider & Bioshock PC Games £161.99
2 x Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (CML8GX3M2B1600C11) £43.99 (£87.98)
Total : £691.31 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Will you be gaming at all. I'm not sure about the graphics card and what not I do know it benefits from OpenGL/CL?, however I'd head down the 2011 route for sure.

What you running on the VMs? If it's CODA on Mac then kudos to you ;)

Perhaps stick an SSD in there for Photoshop etc. 64GB will do it.

Thanks for the above.

Is the socket 2011 boards future proof? will it support any newer cpu's coming out?

The only game I have installed is Tribes Ascend and I've not played that in along time as I mainly use my xbox if I want to game. But saying that, I am waiting for BF4 spec's, so a high end GPU is not really on the list for now.

Thinking about getting a Samsung 840 Pro.

Edit : Oh and in the VM's I just run a bunch of different OS's to do testing, not actually had time to setup a MAC OS yet though, got any guides? ;) (esp since safari not supported on PC anymore)

I've just been talking to my friend about a new PC and he suggest this..

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-3770K 3.50GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £269.99
1 x Gigabyte ATi Radeon HD 7950 Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with Crysis 3 & Bioshock PC Games £251.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77X-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £112.99
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TD120BW) £79.99
1 x Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (CML8GX3M2B1600C11) £43.99
Total : £770.95 (includes shipping : £10.00).

+ £80 for the case

Takes me £51 over my budget (I'm ok with that)

He said it's up to me on the GPU though since I won't be playing games.

If you're not playing games then I suggest you look into it more and see what ones best and then sink some money into an extra 8GB RAM if you will be using a lot of it in VMs.

A quick google search will bring up some ;)

Maybe go with an ASUS board. Some Gigabyte boards have had problems with SLAT and Hyper V.

Note: If you install the Windows Phone SDK 8.0 on a computer with a Gigabyte motherboard and the USB 3.0 host controller enabled in the BIOS, the computer might stop responding when it boots (for details on impacted Gigabyte motherboad models, see Installing Hyper-V on Gigabyte systems). To resolve this, disable USB 3.0 support in computer's BIOS.

Hey,

I'm still undecided on what CPU to go for, i7-3770K or i5-3570K.. or if I should wait for the new CPU's out soon.

I have posted in the CPU area to see what people think.

Hopefully I should have an idea what I will be going for soon.
