I think the Samsung 830 SSD would be a good choice 

i have the zalman z11 plus and when i take out my slots i can get them back in? you sure your doing it right hehe?

If you can afford one of the better ssd's then go for it. They're all 2.5" unless otherwise stated and will fit just fine.
You are right, they are all the same size, but laptop ssd`s are slightly thinner.
Unless he's got a super slim laptop, any of the desktop ssd's should go.
As he has`nt mentioned what type of laptop he has, i thought it worth mentioning. Most ssd`s are 9-9.5mm thick and laptop ssd`s are 7mm.
I would recommend website for any type of software e.g windows 7
They are a lot cheaper then anyone else. All you need to do is say what school, college or uni you go to and if you don't then just give them a random it doesn't matter and they don't investigate.
