Hi,

Going to put together a PC to be used as a home server for all our files, printers etc... and also for running a few DBs and doing the odd bit of work on.

Rough idea on spec at the moment is;

Skylake i5 (6600)?
16GB DDR4 RAM (or 32GB for future proof)?
240GB SSD for the OS alongside a 2TB storage HDD
Inbuilt sound/graphics will be fine
No OS, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers needed

I think I'm happy with the CPU, RAm and HDDs but am stuck on where to go for the motherboard, they all seem fine tbh and I can't see I'd use any of the features on the more expensive ones. I just need the minimum so able to handle the hardware I'm connecting, USB3, SATA3 etc...

If you're running a few DBs concurrently, then consider one HDD per DB. Don't bother with the SSD - you won't be constantly rebooting.

If you're not too worried about noise, or have somewhere to put a noisy server, take a look at the Xeon servers on Fleabay

Thanks, I won't be overclocking so I'd probably just go for a 6600 but that motherboard looks like exactly what I'm after.

Noise isn't an issue really as it'll be tucked away, I'm also after something new. SSD is just standard now for OS and applications (especially as it'll get used occasionally). Good idea about the separate HDD for the DBs though.
