Hi there,

I want to get something that is has completely non moving parts and doesn't make any noise what-so-ever to download for me whilst I sleep. That's all it will be doing.

Someone in another thread suggested a PDA, which I am thinking is a great idea as they aren't too expensive and they are tiny and I am right in assuming they have no moving parts (fans, hard drives..etc...) aren't I? So they will be noiseless.

Basically, they are all HTTP downloads, although torrents would be nice, I don't think it will be possible - will it?

I want it to have a download manager on it too, but I want to be able to add links to the queue from my PC - is there any software that does this? If not, Windows Mobile has support for the Compact Framework (.NET) does it? - So I could create a download manager application for it that does what I want?

Also, I have checked and most PDAs come with Wireless B integrated if they have wireless. I have wireless G here and was wondering, with wireless B, will it max out my connection? 200Kbps is my connection maxed out.

So what PDA do you recommend considering I want this for a cheap as possible, preferably with an SD card slot so I can add cards to transfer the files to the PC when downloaded. I WILL be buying second hand as it will be cheaper probably.

Thanks.

Can you suggest a cheaper way of doing it?

I would prefer to download during the night as my connection speed aint that good and can be maxed during the night.

you can get a torrent client for win mobile so it should be possible, but why not just have a laptop there almost silent unless its an old p4 model

Noise of hard drive and fans annoys me. I mean, I could build a passive PC, but it would cost a lot more than a PDA would, and the PDA is much smaller.

It needs to be in my room.

Although I appreciate the suggestions guys, I need something cheap and completely non-moving, and the cheapest thing i can think of is a PDA...

If you have an old pc laying about you could turn it in to a server and just network it up in the attic, or somewhere else out the way.

I have mine downloading torrents and all sorts all controlled via a web interface, was really easy to set up.

Thats what I had originally, but I am going to uni so don't have an attic :p

The house I living it at the moment is not my own either.

I need something completely non-moving and as small as possible, someone suggested a PDA so wondered whether that would do what i needed.

Um, Asus EEE maybe?

But that has fans doesn't it? And even if they only come on every so often, the easiest thing wakes me up :p

Uni is exactly why I made mine, so I could download still while at uni and then stream it to my halls. If your renting your current place obviously thats a no go, but if you could throw it in your parents attic or something then you're still good to go.

Parents is a no go aswell - tried to do this before. To quote:

...it would be a fire hazard - so absolutely not

....would prefer not to leave a machine lying around either....

You could get one of those NAS boxes that can be hacked to run linux, i think Maxtor made one. Or try something like gumstix, but it's probably going to be more expensive than a second hand PDA.

Yeah that's one of the things i looked into originally, but I was unsure of whether i could get it to work with flash memory and an adapter - also, as you said, it would be more expensive than a second hand PDA.
