Thinking about upgrading my PC in the next few months to cope with the demands of photo-editing large D800E files using CS6, LR4 and a mixture of plugins. I do use my PC for gaming, but I'm nowhere near as hardcore as I used to be ... and this would very much be a secondary purpose.

I'm wondering about getting an iMac, but will likely wait for the next iteration to be announced before deciding on whether to persist with a Windows/PC system or taking the plunge into the Apple world ( although I do currently use a Mac Book Air laptop ).

It has been approximately 3 yrs since my last PC build and I haven't really kept up to date with the newer hardware out there. I don't have a set budget in mind.

My own thoughts are as follows :

1. I'd be looking to probably stay with Intel processors as I believe they are presently the best.

2. I'd quite like an SSD drive ( ? 256 Gb capacity ) to install the OS, Photoshop CS6, Lightroom 4 and related plugins on.

3. A good GPU as CS6 will take advantage of graphics acceleration for photo-editing. Not interested in a crossfire / SLI setup for hardcore gaming.

4. Good reliable, high capacity internal disk drives for storage. Probably two drives ... one for Steam, other non-photography related apps and general files, and the other drive purely for storing RAW / TIFFS / Jpegs. I think I'd probably want the drive that stores photo files to be 2 Tb ( I might get away with 1 Tb for the other drive ).

5. An optical drive ( yup, still use one sometimes ... but usually back up up stuff to external hard drives ). Undecided on whether to get a blu-ray burner or not. Don't presently use one. I think a DVD burner would suffice - current one is dual layer burner.

6. Memory - just can't get enough for photo-editing. I would want at least 16 Gb - possibly might push for 32 Gb.

7. Would be looking to get a new tower case to put this all in ... something stylish ( as in gun metal finish etc , not like a UFO that has 200 flashing neon lights :D ).

8. Reliable PSU - have used modular Corsair ones in recent times.

9. Motherboard ... I have no particular preferences with make. But would like one that can take up to 64 Gb of memory just in case I decide to add later down the line. USB 3.0 would be helpful, onboard sound ( haven't bothered with a separate sound card for years ).

10. Already have mouse, monitor, keyboard etc so those wouldn't need to be factored in to the cost.

Would be grateful for your thoughts ...... go on, hit me with the bad news ;)

This is a good build for the money, just some options to think about:
Look at the Samsung 830 Series or to the Crucial SSD's, I would say they're the best SSD's out there.

If you don't intend on going Sli then you could drop the PSU down to 650w, it will easily power an i7 and a gtx670.

You may want to add on a 1TB hard drive in addition to the 2TB Moshi specced you, as you said for all you photos etc

But they're just small points, that's a very good spec. I assume you're running IPS monitors, as if not I would definitely recommend getting one (or three) :D

Thanks for that. Yup, I'm running IPS monitors .... and already have Windows 7, so I could negate that cost from the overall package. Would probably pick up one more hard drive ( perhaps 1 Tb just for additional non-photographic related storage ) and keep the higher rated PSU - as I'm a firm believer for having plenty left in the tank should I wish to upgrade or add further components somewhere down the line. Cost looks reasonable actually, all considered :)

Regards Windows 7, make sure it's better than the Home Premium version which only allows you to have 16gb RAM, look for the Ultimate which allows more RAM (which you asked for earlier :))

+1 but change the SSD to a crucial, samsung or intel.

This is a high end IVY system, my thoughts for this is you could use the extra cash and watercool it.
You would be limited to 32GB with the ram though but i struggle to believe you would ever need more.
I have gone for the 4GB 670 as i figured rendering requires a lot of video memory as well as RAM

Just another possible option for you :)

You're pretty much wasting dosh on a super hi res video card for Photoshop btw, the cheap one I got nails it perfectly.

Also I was using a 4GB system before and even editing B0+ posters was fine so this new 16GB system is a flier!

He said that it will also be used for games, but as he didn't spec what games and at what res I thought I would cover his back ;) plus an Nvidia card would allow Photoshop to take advanage of PhysX and Cuda unlike an AMD counterpart.

Also with your build doesn't the lack of an HDD cause you a nightmare with storage of all your PSD's? as you should know if your working with 100+ layers at high res's the PSD file is going to huge? I have a few 100Mb PSD mind you they are A1 paper size as I don't use scalling when printing as you do lose the quailty of the image when you try to print borderless A1.

Try having about 50 pictures open at the same time ;)

Ehter - "I do use my PC for gaming, but I'm nowhere near as hardcore as I used to be ... and this would very much be a secondary purpose." - thats why I discounted it.

On my rig I have 8TB of storage from other sources :) I've done 8m x 3m banners with it and a ton of 48 sheet billboards so its all good.

oulton - Done that before too, I run a media business LOL! I've also got a Nikon D800 so know what those lovely 36mp files are like.

Was just trying to save the guy some dosh that isnt totally needed and based on my own experience of doing media work for a living :)

Fair point, the PhysX and Cuda on the Nvidia cards will help in both Sony Vegas and Abode Photoshop tho and as the system will be used for gaming no point having them look like dog poo ;)

On the other point, we don't know if he has a NAS unit or not :p so that was £200 added to my spec, and he didn't spec a budget if I had one in the £1200 range I would have specced an Ivy i7 too

You'd be surprised with Vegas. I ditched the 3GB nVidia beast for a lowly 1GB AMD because Vegas doesnt see newer cars, let alone use them properly - and it also crashes all over the place with GPU acceleration! Unreal I know but hey ... Sony.

Photoshop really flies on the AMD card I got and thats with brand new CS6 installed and all updates and being stills I cant really see something bigger and more costly doing a lot more - could be wrong but the different between CPU to GPU on this AMD is nice though.

Only thing Im a bit scunnered with is I reckon I could have bought 12 month old tech for less and got roughly the same results with a 2600K overclocked. But hey, new and shiny it is :D

Fair do's :) to OP the only way your going to get to 64Gb RAM is to socket 2011 btw LGA1155 doesn't support that much .... not even sure it would even we did see 16Gb sticks......

Thanks for all the suggestions. Good point regards having Windows 7 Pro / Ultimate .... I forgot the lesser editions support a lower amount of RAM. As for my gaming, it'll be stuff like Guild Wars 2, Torchlight 2 , Skyrim , Witcher 2 ... I don't usually play FPS. Resolution will be 1900 x 1200 ( possibly 2560 x 1440 in the near future ).

Quite liked the suggestion of having 2 X SSD - one for the OS and Adobe apps, and the other as a scratch disk or my Steam folder.

As for photo-editing, I'm fairly sure 16 Gb RAM would suffice most of the time, however some of the panos / composites I've done have really ground my present rig to a halt ( it has 8 Gb ). Since memory is realtively cheap, I'm thinking why not splash out and possibly go for 32 Gb .... adds a degree of future proofing.

Any major benefits of Socket 2011 over LGA1155 by the way ?

The simple answer is, depends what you wanna do with it. Ivybridge is the best the LGA1155 socket is gonna get ! The LGA2011 socket is sandybridge-e you can still upgrade to the Ivybridge-e which will share the same socket (when released).... Socket LGA1155 is aimed at the main steam market Socket LGA2011 is aimed at the professional media creation pro.

A break down between them can be found here between the top end LGA 1155 i7 which is the 3770k , and the middle range LGA 2011 i7 which is the 3930K.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/552?vs=551

The top flight LGA 1155 vs the entry level LGA 2011 is a follows:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/523?vs=551

The graphic's card depends mate for them games an Nvidia GTX 570 would suit you but if you are running multi monitors you're want an GTX 600 series GPU, but it comes down to what you wanna spend at the end of the day. The LGA 2011 support upto 8 DIMMS of DDR3 memory (depending on the motherboard) compared to the LGA 1155's 4.

If you a professional media creation pro, then the 2x SSD's makes scene or if you have a truck load of RAM you could use that as a RAM Disk as a scratch disk.
