Hi all,

Another spec thread, but I know how much you love them :p .

I am currently running the following:

C2D E6600 @ Stock (Stock Cooler)
Asus P5B Deluxe Mobo
2 GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400
8800GTS 320 MB
Creative X-Fi Gamer Sound Card

For upgrade options, I was thinking of getting more memory, although this would only make sense to me if I was on 64 bit. I currently run 32 Bit XP Pro, which I am happy with. Do you agree? Is it worth upgrading to Vista?

The motherboard could also do with an upgrade, but unfortunately I have since lost track of technology. Any ideas on the kind of chipset to go for?

Also, the graphics card could do with a revamp, but Im not sure what to. Any ideas?

I have a budget of roughly £250 to spend, although it is fairly flexible.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

James

Well XP can address 3.25GB ram I think (though only showing 2.75 on mine for some reason o_0 ) and if you think you might upgrade at some point to a 64bit OS then 2x2GB DDR800 would be a good investment, but if you want to stick with what you got, you're probably good.
Your graphics card is the only other thing I would consider upgrading and even that isn't at all bad, it can't be 18 months old really?
Maybe a HD4850 if you really want to spend your money, but really do you need to spend the money or you just wanting to :D I struggle to control my urges regularly. (sorry to be negative)

I reckon the best upgrade would be a 4850/4870 and a half decent cooler so that you can get that E6600 clocked. It should easily hit 3.2-3.4ghz on a P5B. The E6600 is still a very good cpu and has a lot of life left in it yet. I personally thought Vista was a load of rubbish (my own opinion of which i am perfectly entitled to). I still have it sat in my desk drawer. Tried it for a week or so and went back to XP Pro.

Yes, I was rather reluctant to go to Vista. It just doesnt seem worth it to me. Id rather sit it out and wait for the next Windows tbh.

As for a cooler, I think that is a good idea. What do you think of this? I hear they're pretty good. Or could you suggest any alternatives?

I think part of it is just wanting to spend money, but with prices as they are on RAM atm, maybe it would also be worth getting 2 GB more.

I'd get the Noctua NH-U12P or a TRUE120 with a decent 120mm fan. Otherwise a tuniq, but for some reason CPU coolers have gone up loads in price over the past few months... strange.

Not sure about high end air coolers. I have my main rig watercooled and a Freezer 7 Pro on my E5200 in my second rig. Personally i think that most of the high end coolers are stupidly expensive.
