Preferably powered as I have 20 or so 4" posts to put in. Do not need the best just something good enough for the job. Don't want to hire in case I have more to do later and can take my time with the first batch.
Andi.

Straight steel for making a hole. something like this: Wiggle around getting stones out of the way to about 2 foot down.

And a double handled post knocker like this:(plus a mate to help)

20 isn't very many to knock in by hand.

Lol please feel free to pop over and do them for me.

Maybe I should add I have blood pressure, cholesterol and back problems ☺ and am old ish.

I opted to one from tool station for about £30
yet to see what it will perform like though, looks like a solid product.

I have used both methods an iron bar or auger and found the iron bar and fencing bell far easier (and cheaper!) Augers struggle when they hit rock and a pain when they don't drill straight.

Sorry but 4" or 100mm are sold as posts. Google says so. A Stake is a small wooden post. FISHGUTS is only right if you are a fit healthy young person that doesn't have a fascination with motors and engines.

Andi.

Always called them fencing stakes at 4" and so do my suppliers.

You could also look at one of these https://www.monstershop.co.uk/t-mech-2-stroke-petrol-post-driver

Might be better than using an auger as they will go in firm rather than loosening the soil, just make sure your stakes are pointed.

Ok so a stake has a point whilst a post doesn't. So yes I could bash in a few stakes or put some posts in a hole.
Glad that is sorted.
Now need to look at post driver vs hole auger.
Andi.

You don't need a power one. I bought an even cheaper version of the one Armageus suggested in post #4 (£15 on Ebay if I remember right) and it works brilliantly. It's surprisingly easy once you get it biting and did 26 post holes in around 1 hour. It's handy for planting large potted plants as well.

Hi Andi,

It's such a small job & if you can't do manual stuff, then why not get a price for just getting it done?

Also both a square fencing post with a square end, commonly found in a house project, or a round farm field fencing post, with a pointy end will be called a fencing post at 4"(I do both commercially & my father kills wasps for a living)

A stake to me is a bit of tile/slate batton with the end sawed off for marking stuff.

Hire a mini digger, press posts in with bucket, spend the rest of the day playing in mini digger. Win win! :D

Why not go all out and get one of these?

To be fair depending on ground conditions, using the pole method can be dam hard work. I've done it in London where ground is clay and it almost killed us digging 8 holes. If I did it again I would also be looking for mechanical means just like the op.
