My trusty Black & Decker power drill handed down from my granddad finally died today whilst drilling holes in some concrete :(

But it means new toys are on the way! Not really up to scratch on what's a good power drill these days, any recommendations? Budget around £50 - £80 ideally.

I will just brand drop.

Hitachi, Dewalt, Mikita. The newer Black & Decker have a bad rep. They are basically budget tools where as they use the Dewalt brand for their quality tools(B&D own Dewalt).

You won't get something good that can drill concrete for £80. I'm assuming you want cordless as well? The Bosch pro stuff (blue, not green) is very good as well.

I'd look at ebay, as there is usually loads of end of job stuff going on there. I picked up a nice Makita kango a couple of months ago for under £100, probably only six months old.

Nah, cordless ideally for more grunt!

Didn't think of eBay, will have a quick look.

for concrete i would go for a rotary hammer drill £30-40 b+q own brand (macallister or alike) you will get 1-3 year warrenty and 30-40quid aint bad for 1-3 years use

crap? they have the same bosch motors as pretty much everything else, with out the branding and a longer warranty, whats crap about that? rotary hammer is alpha

they have the same power and mechanisms as the more expeinsive drills, slightly worse build quailty which is why they dont tend to last as long, but with a 3 year warranty you can keep replacing them for free if they break...no problems

This.... trade quality stuff is great if you want it to do trade quality work day in day out. Most people just don't need that.

I'd definitely recommend an SDS type drill for concrete, I have a cheap Screwfix one and it's excellent for the price, it was about £40 I think.

check out ryobi. there tools are cheaper than the main 3 (dewalt, bosch and makita) but the quality isnt bad at all. ive sold a few and none of em have come back.
