I'm trying to find a good way of managing podcasts properly for my ipod (nano 5G) without using iTunes. By 'managing properly', I mean basically replicating the functionality in itunes: Subscribing, downloading regularly, uploading unlistened episodes to ipod on connecting etc.

I currently use foobar to manage music on there, but foobar doesn't have the podcast management capabilities I want (I don't think...). Sharepod allows you to take a given mp3 and mark it as a 'Podcast', but still has no idea about downloading regularly. Yamipod claims to support it, but won't work with a nano 5G.

Any other ideas? OS is Windows 7 64 bit, or if I do it at work, W7 32bit.

I know you said you didn;t want to use iTunes, but have you tried using iTunes but with making sure you turn off all the automatic management features are turned off first. I install iTunes and disbale all the functionality for organising music files and organise, file and tag my audio files myself and drag them into the iTunes window where it just displays them as Albums and use it solely for syncing to my iPhone. Podcasts are still managed by iTunes and they are stored in the iTunes > iTunes Media folder whcih is not ideal but I suppose it works and they get updated and synced to my iPhone automatically. iTunes is actually fine when you don;t allow it to try and organise your library as it makes a complete mess out of it.

I really wanted to avoid having itunes, mostly because in my experience it's rubbish and huge. I've also experienced problems with it in the past repeatedly trying to wipe my ipod every time I plug it in, simply because I've used a non-itunes app to upload music to it.
