Ok, there's some specific criteria for this request! I've played through FF13 as my introduction to the series, and loved it. I'm currently playing FF9, and loving that too, although it's making me glad I played 13 first - I think I wouldn't have been as impressed with 13 otherwise!

In light of the above, I've picked up FF7 and 8, although I haven't played them yet.

What I'm after is recommendations for other JRPGS - however, I want to stick with a "menu select" combat style - i.e. no cursor aiming etc. I play JRPGs as a relaxing game type, and don't want to be frantically going at the controller like I was playing an FPS!

All responses appreciated, cheers guys!

Thanks Strife, already knew that was out though! Was thinking away from the FF series.

Thanks exhash for the thoughtful and considered response...

Menu driven i actually can't think of any worth having. Valkyria Chronicles is the best JRPG on the PS3 imo though it's kind of a turn based tactical RPG, so not entirely what you're after. I didn't like XIII much though i'll be honest so my opinion might not be of much use to you. The gameplay was good but the story was just, well... not up to scratch.

Got access to a Wii? The best JRPG in years was released on that recently.

What is a jrpgs? Some sort or console abbreviation?

Japanese role-playing games. Generally (but not always..) more focus on following a story around existing characters, whereas a lot of western RPGs would have you create a character from scratch and define it's traits.

This. It's not your traditional RPG, but it's still one of the best games I've played this gen by a long way.

I wouldn't miss playing it for the world if I had to go back. :)

Thing is with Valkyria Chronicles, you do have to manually control the characters and aim as well, since this is more of a Tactical Strategy RPG with 3rd-person elements. But nevertheless, still one of the best games within the whole subgenre and exclusive on the PS3.

Other games I'd recommend to look at are;

White Knight Chronicles II. It also includes a remastered version of the first game so this is a very good package and are exclusives to the PS3. Has online Co-Op options too, similar to a Phantasy Star Online type of game.

Star Ocean - The Last Hope: International. A better version of the 360 game with some improvements, added content and dual-language option.

Resonance of Fate. Not an exclusive, but it's by the same developers as Star Ocean. Interesting and can be quite difficult battle mechanics.

Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice or Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten. Very Japanese old-school style and both are also exclusives.

PS3 version might have more options (and option to hear native voices instead of english) but the graphics are atrocious..... wouldnt even call it HD tbh.. OP might be ok as long as he doesnt play the 360 version first. Good rpg otherwise. 360 version is better imo.

Care to explain how the 360 version is better?

As for the graphics, it might be rough around the edges, but I quite like the artstyle and direction which makes up for it. Has that Anime Sci-Fi Phantasy Star Online look.

For someone who's not played a Disgaea title before, does it make much difference if you skip 3/earlier titles in the series and go straight to 4, or is it best to try and play 3 first?
Tempted to try them but have a pretty hefty backlog of games right now!

i prefer it. Graphics look sharp and crisp very vibrant but on the ps3 its lower res and more jaggies i think as well. The extras u get with the international (ps3) version arent worth it. Of all the multiplatform games (360/ps3) i have played this is the worst. Dont mean the game (game is vv good possibly my favourite ps3 jrpg actually (dont consider VC a jrpg :p) and i recommend folk to play it) but i couldnt play the ps3 version longer for 5 mins remembering what the 360 version looked like.

I don't know about 4, but Disgaea 3 is a self contained story so you don't need to play 1 + 2. |To be honest though, it wasn't my thing. It's very much a tactical game and storyline isn't much of a focus.

Liking the look of Last Hope and White Knight Chronicles 2, going to check those out I think, cheers.

I've heard good things about Eternal Sonata, but reading about it I felt the style was more aimed at kids?

Definitely going to be seeing what demos for these are on PSN, thanks :).

Not much to choose from really, JRPGs have been pretty poor on PS3 and I wouldn't even consider Star Ocean 4, it's pretty much all what's wrong about JRPGs, read a few reviews from people who have played it.
Disgaea is hard to figure out at first, not a lot is explained to you so you have to figure out most things yourself. I'd also avoid the titles like Cross Edge, Trinity Universe and Hyperdimension Neptunia, these are all very samey and a truely Marmite kind of game. I'd almost class them as a sub genre tbh. You might enjoy Atelier Rorona or Atelier Totori, again both are very similiar games that focus more on making items than your traditional RPG.

Eternal Sonata was awful and Star Ocean is not turn based so I'm not sure it's what the OP is after.

I too prefer turn based jrpgs. Can you get hold of a cheap 360? Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey and The Last Remnant are all excellent and turn based. Enchanted Arms was a launch title and probably looks a bit dated but is still worth a play and then there are Tales of Vesperia and Magna Carta 2 which despite live combat are two of the best trad. jrpgs of the generation.

I dont agree Eternal Sonata was awful, it was one of the earlier games on my 360 and I genuinely enjoyed it. It was also quite a good looking game for it's release date.

It's a semi-realtime combat JRPG, and whilst the story is bizzare, the reverance to Chopin and music in general meant I rather liked it. The reviews at the time were mixed, some liked it, some didn't, so YMMV.

By contrast Enchanted Arms I considered far more generic although still playable, but I'd definately rate Eternal Sonata as the better game.

true it isnt turn-based but the combat is quite exciting. Special moves, magic easy to switch characters etc Doesnt really break the mold so much but the story is pretty good (slow to start)

otherwise if its turn based then u got hrmm Lost Odyssey oh wait thats 360 :D....Valykrie Chronicles, Resonance of fate and white knight chronicles and thats about it!
