I currently use my PS3 for Blu-ray and DVD playback, haven't played a game on it for months, so it seems a little wasted to me, and a HTPC might be a better option.

I'm looking for a reasonably priced, quiet, 'subtle', SFF machine that will do the following :-

*Play back both HD-DVD (I'll be replacing a Toshiba HD-EP30 too) and Blu-ray

*Has HDMI output with HD sound to my Sony STR-DG910 amp, the amp can play back Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD (via LPCM as far as I'm aware, if this makes any difference?) if the source can decode it (as the PS3 does), but unfortunately can't decode it internally.

*Can be totally controlled by my Harmony 885 including turning on and off if this is possible?

*Anything else I might need.

This machine will probably end up replacing my Toshiba, PS3 and EEE 701, and possibly my Sky box in the long term too. Cheers. :)

My budget would be whatever I can get for a PS3, EP-30 and EEE 701 plus a couple of hundred quid tops, if I have to spend considerably more than my current equipment's worth, I may as well keep it! ;)

Why not keep what you have the now since you have everything you need?

You could always get a bigger HDD for your PS3 and bung linux on that if you wanted a download box as well?

If I can't get something to replace them all, then I will do. ;)

Tried a couple of Linux distro's on a 250gb HDD, and couldn't get away with them.

Hated the fact that you had to constantly set your main OS in the PS3 menu, and couldn't simply switch between Sony/Linux, unless that's fixed now?

Found one for sale at £300, the following spec be OK for what I'm after?

Soundgraph Imon Imedian HD with remote control

ive got a bluray capable pc and laptop, and i dont use either over my ps3 for watching blurays. Although the Windvd BD on my vaio is the best bluray software ive used (and ive used them all) its still slow and clunky and is still a world apart from putting a disc in the ps3 and and playing it. Its altogether a slower and clunkier experiance. There can be other issue - films not playing, poor stability of some of the players, poor integration with media center of some of them (if thats your thing). have a good think about it before you take the plunge.

If it were me and i didnt want the ps3 any more, id change ot for a sony or samsung stand alone player.

Thanks for the reply.

I think it's just something I need to do, whether or not I'll benefit from doing it is another matter, but if I don't try, I'll never know, and it'll just keep nagging at me!

I just wanted to check and see if it was feasible to replace my current components with one component, and it would appear that it is, at least to a fair degree.

If I don't get on with a HTPC setup, I can always sell it on and get a standalone player, so I shouldn't lose out on too much if I go second hand.

Bought the one I mentioned earlier for £285 delivered :-

Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H motherboard

2gb DDR2 memory
256mb Passive Sapphire HD3470
LG GGC-H20L Blu-ray/HD-DVD drive

Sold my PS3 to a mate for £200 over the weekend, so £85 for a HTPC seems reasonable if I can get it all working as I want it. :D
