I am looking for some organised leagues based on Formula 1.

Now I know the obvious choice is F1 2013, but I'm really not too keen on how that plays. So I am not after a "licensed replica" of F1, but that style of open wheel racing. (Formula Reiza/Extreme for example in GSC:E)

I can run pretty much any sim on my system, the only requirement is that it has to support the XBox 360 controller until I sort out a new wheel.

So, lets have it. Where is the best, open wheel league racing at the moment?

I used to play rFactor quite abit. Theres loads of F1 mods out there. Best thing to do is a quick google search and try a few out. I can't remember any at the moment, I'm sorry, but will chip in when I find out.

For me, iRacing with the DW12 Indycar on road is about the best open wheel experience in any sim at the moment. The F1 car on iRacing is pretty terrible but the DW12 is awesome, it's maybe slightly slower than an F1 but racing it around Spa this week is about as close as it gets.

Iracing + DW12 = Best open wheel experience in sim racing

Its also by far the best platform for league/online racing etc

Although you will get annihilated if you're using a joypad

Assetto Corsa is alright, I don't think its as good as people are saying. Its playable with a 360 controller the same way DCS Warthog is playable with a £10 joystick.

As in, it works...but you're really not experiencing it properly.

I would stick to games such as codemasters games if a gamepad is all you have.

I currently have:

iRacing - Dislike the price and payments required to get to decent open wheel
Assetto Corsa - Unfinished, awesome play with a wheel, awful with controller
F1 2013 - What the hell is this meant to be?
Grid: Autosport - Just fun play about thing, no real oragnised leagues about
Race07 - A bit dated now

What are peoples opinions of Game Stock Car: Extreme?

I am essentially looking for racing as clean as iRacing, without money grabbing scumbags behind it.

Yeah I played Race 07 with a gamepad, takes a bit of setting up to get it right and not super twitchy but once set up you can play it reasonably well.

There aren't any other sims that haven't been mentioned that work well with a gamepad.

You won't get clean public racing anywhere else other than organised leagues which don't offer anywhere near the same level of online functionality and features as iracing. Calling iracing money grabbing scumbag is pretty amusing though given everyone who pays does so because they are happy to do so. for most people iracing is a hobby... A cheap one as well relative to other hobbies. If your mentality going into it is that it should be priced the same as a £40 game then you're delusional given the service they offer relative to their competitors.

Iracing is great value for money if you're serious about online sim racing.

I spend far more money on my other hobbies and I own 100% content.

Think they still race on nascar 2003.

It's down to closed community leagues, but worth signing up to one if you're after clean racing. A pad could be an issue though, same with grandprix legends if you realy want to go back.

Bit harsh on the irace though mate, they just fill the enthusiast niche. People that love that thing.. cars, trains and planes.... middle aged men with time/hobby, spend whatever money:o

Not that much of an enthusiast myself so i could never justify signing up.. but yeah id be in on it if it were casual friendly.

It's not necessarily the cost I object to, but the model.

Subscription + Content + Drop subscription and lose access to all the content you have "licensed" is a stupid model, forcing content purchases to progress to a specific class.

The whole business model is to financially tie people into the sim. Which is why I'm looking for organised leagues for another sim.

Well, i cant speak for everyone, but i can tell you im not remotely happy about it! The problem is that everyone is hiding behind its paywall, its just not possible to find consistently honest-intention drivers elsewhere, because they're all hiding behind that paywall. You'll get clean races elsewhere, but you'll also get idiots with dishonest-intentions and terrible drivers in equal measure.
You can join leagues, but they dictate when you race, you cant just practice and think 'screw it, i'll race now' cos the race is scheduled for 3 days.

Thats the problem with the mainstream titles, you F1 series, AC, and pCARS when released, Steam makes them mainstream and the 'ooh looks like Forza/GT' crowd join in, bringing their console rules with them.

You could get away with it more in LFS and probably rFactor cos they were smaller titles without the marketing etc.

The only reason i use iRacing is because i can get a race if i fancy one. I can be sat in bed, watching TV, look at the time and figure screw it, lets book in for a race (typically a 3/5am race!).

Yeah, thats why i have a 4-5yr account, when i've only played it the last 14wks. I was happy elsewhere, LFS mainly , but even in pCARS or AC it was fun, but i would only 'race' (hotlapping mainly) with a mate, but what i really miss is the racing and while LFS you could easily find decent racing, and join the server mid-race if there was room. This whole lobby then load track and lock the doors, then reset everything when the race is over... is so poop.
If it was 1 payment model, not both, i'd have been playing it for much longer, but both is just greed, especially when it comes with their 'no refunds for the content we refuse to let you try beforehand' blag, is just insulting, and denies us our legal right to return something if we're not entirely satisfied with it. I'd imagine if you kick up a stink, they'd opt to close your account, and take the content you've paid for but 'dont own' with them.
