Spec me a racing game...

Don't usually do the "spec me" threads but as far as modern racing games go, I'm pretty much in the dark.

Racing games I've spent most time on are F1 Challenge 99-02 and GPL. I like F1 challenge as there are so many mods available and it can be relatively realistic, alas, it is fairly dated now and it doesn't support 1900x1200...
GPL, sure I don't need to explain that, everyone loves GPL. If you don't like it, you're wrong. :p

What I'm looking for is a current racing game on the PC that's realistic, looks great and features a wide-ish range of cars. By that I mean, slow "normal" cars to F1 style racers. :)
I'd quite like a decent amount of tracks, specifically the Nurburgring in it's F1 and epic flavours...
It does not matter if the game features ultra modern vehicles.

I've seen a little of R-Factor, it looks like it would be suitable. Is it good though?
Any recommendations?

rFactor will probably have the widest range of cars including F1 mods if you can be bothered to set it all up, but for me it's too much effort..
Personally Race 07 / GTR evo is where it's at (hence the sig) - mix of touring / GT / open wheel cars and more, and a large selection of custom tracks. Nordschleife, Nurburgring GP, and endurance are all official tracks. There will be an MMG F1 mod eventually, and the F3000 cars are a good substitute (not as fast of course).

People will probably recommend LiveForSpeed as well but I believe the range of cars is somewhat smaller. Can't really comment though as I've only ever tried the demo.

Rfactor with all the mods is totally cracking mate :)

you can pick up the 2008 SE that i have for peanuts on the bay of flea's too (sub £5)

GRID is probably one of the best looking racing games around. Dunno if it has F1 but it looks pretty.

rFactor with mods has you covered, but I always found it tedious trying to race online due to all the different versions of mods etc.

Live For Speed is what I race on most, you have cars from the UF1000 (old mini) up to the BMW Sauber F1 car. There are a few road car classes in between, also GTR type cars and other single seaters. VW Scirocco is coming, but don't ask when.

The LFS demo is worth a go, if you like the feel of the physics then it's only £24 to unlock.
