Spec me a replacement AMD GPU

Right, I think my AMD 295x2 is having serious heat issues of late (not sure if the weather is to blame!).

Basically a couple of months ago, I noticed when I was playing DC Universe Online, the screen would just go blank. I would reboot the machine, but nothing would happen, the machine appears to boot, but the screen was still blank. Eventually, leaving the machine to cool down for a bit would allow me to get back on. But then I tested with other games and the same thing was happening.

I removed the side panel of my case (it does not have an intake fan as one cannot be put there), to see if this would help. And it did. I've even taken the card out to see if anything was out of the ordinary, but nothing. All is ok with the card itself.

However, this past week, whilst playing Hitman (damn good game, by the way!), the GPU again has been shutting itself down and the screen goes blank. The side panel is still off. So now, I am wondering, do I get a new GPU (something along the lines of a 390X or push to a Fury) or find a way to get a fan pointing directly to the GPU itself. I have a Zalman H1 full tower case. It doesn't have a place to even put a fan on the side panel. I'd either have to get it modded or probably move the PC to the side of the desk. Simply because the PC is against a wall right now. But not right up against it.

What is even more of a shame is the fact you cannot adjust the fan manually on the 295x2. This would help me a great deal if I was able to do this, but AMD didn't put that into the GPU Overdrive.

Why not jusy buy a new case?

Cos this was a new case. I only got it August 2015. Yeah, I know. I should have gotten one with fan integrated. But I honestly thought it would be alright. The case does have good airflow. Maybe if I didn't have 295x2, it might be a different story.

Or take the side panel off

Oops, speed reading again, yeah sounds like it might be on the way out

I'm thinking the same thing. I will give it a few more months and if it does start to get even worse than it is now, then I will look at buying a new GPU. I did buy it 2nd from AMDMatt over on MM back in August last year.

295X2 requires a special placement.
Do you have the radiator higher than the card with the pipes down?
Do you have the radiator fan blowing cold air into the case?
Is the fan connected to the card as normal or to different power socket?
What is your PSU?
If you have 2 akasa apaches put then on push pull config at 100% fan speed.
Have you overclocked the card?

If you can survive a bit until AMD announce their higher end stuff (I'll be honest, I don't know when that'll be - could be a while) then the Fury X price will likely drop pretty substantially or there might be a better option in their new lineup. If you're having heat issues in your current case though - yes it could be the card but it could also be the case - then you'd have to look at either a new case or another hybrid/liquid card (which is why I suggest waiting for FX prices to go down).

Have you got a picture of the inside of your case showing how you have the 295X2 setup along with your other components?

Do you have the radiator higher than the card with the pipes down? Yes. I made sure this was the case when I fitted the card.
Do you have the radiator fan blowing cold air into the case? As far as I can tell, the air is blowing out of the case.
Is the fan connected to the card as normal or to different power socket? It's connected to the card.
What is your PSU? Can't remember the make, but it's a 1250W.
If you have 2 akasa apaches put then on push pull config at 100% fan speed. Don't have those fans.
Have you overclocked the card? No. Wouldn't dream of it on this card.

Yeah, the Fury X's are another option. I will keep an eye on those.

I'm at work at the moment and then flying to Florida on Wednesday. I will see if I can get a pic before I go.

Change the fan to blow cold air in the case. I had this card.

And no need to change it. If frickng fast nowadays especally on DX12 and you can overclock it at least to 1100/1625 with the cooler.

You can always watercool it if you want.

I've done watercooling, many many years ago. I've said I will not do it again. Lol. But I will see about switching the fans to blow into the machine instead of out. Thanks. :)

I changed the fans around to blow air into the case. Played a good solid hour or so of Hitman and no blank screen. Will continue to keep monitoring. But otherwise, finger's crossed this could do the trick. :)

I had the card, and there is a whole discussion about it.

When you set it up working properly is a beast. Also when you have time try 2 Akasa Apaches. They will boost the cooling, and you will be able to overclock it to 1100/1625 at least.

Ofc watercooling is always an option and there are some fantastic middle grounds today from fully custom cooling. The EK Predator 360 at 80% fan speed I believe will be more than sufficient to cool the 295X2 (with pre-filed QDC block from them) and your CPU.

Saying that because I have the Predator 360, with the 4820K @ 4950 and an overclocked Nano, at 70% fan speed and still there is plenty of cooling headroom for second overclocked Nano.

While is dead easy to plug and expand using EK's QDC solution. :D
(and no need to check for leaks etc because is as good as an AIO)

Nice. I shall look into that. Thank you! :)
