We have a standard O2 router (model TG587nv2) in our house, and out new housemate seems to be a cheeky one. I think he uses torrent without configuring it so it maxes out download and upload making internet almost impossible for others to use. To cut the story short I want to buy a router that has some traffic shaping functionality - the standard O2 router doesn't have anything it's very basic.

Just need something so I could see stats per IP maybe and be able to allocate bandwidth to devices/IPs

Anything decent and cheap?

Consider the Netgear 3700 with Gargoyle. The QOS is very easily configured, between setting priorities and overall min/max speeds for a given protocol or entire IP address.

Gargoyle is fantastic for QoS. I'm not sure if the 3700 has a modem, but i am sure you could use the thomson in modem only with any cable only router.

Yes, I use the be* supplied 585V7 as a modem, then cat-5 to the 3700 for routing and wifi.

Means the modem is by the master socket, but the router is in the best place for wireless coverage. But you are quite right, the 3700 has no adsl modem.

I too am doing something similar with the supplied router in modem only mode and my Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH (running Gargoyle) handling all the routing duties. Works very well!
