Spec me a rig + Screen/KB/Mouse

A friends son has spec'd himself a machine for around £800 which was roughly;

Core i5
24" screen
GTX660
8gb DDR3
Case
1TB HDD

This seemed quite expensive to me so I said I'd have a look and see what he could get for that sort of price and also the cheapest he could build a similar system.

He does want to play some of the higher end games and ideally the system needs to have a little future proofing in place.

I was also surprised he hadn't spec'd himself an SSD drive.

Any ideas? Since I've not paid a great deal of attention to consumer end kit in the past few years I'm a little out of touch.

Check which i5 he's going for, iirc Haswell are cheaper than Ivy/Sandybridge, also the screen could be anywhere from £150-£500.

I believe it wasn't Haswell, screen was around £150.

Given that sort of money what kind of system would you put together?
