Bit of a different one for the spec heads.

Low cost is preferred (thinking trying to keep under the £200 mark)
Probably needs to be dual core and needs 2 nics (WAN & LAN)
As small and efficient as possible.

It's going to be compared to stuff like the Alix PC boards, had considered a HP microserver but seems the wrong form factor for a router build. (What router has 4 HDD bays?)

Possibly upgrading to fibre later so maybe some expandability to factor in?

A while a go I did the same thing, I just bought a cheap HP Desktop (can't remember the exact model but similar to HP Compaq 6005) then added a Dual Gigabit ethernet and wifi card's. I use pfSense for the OS and its perfect for what I need.

Nice idea.

I have had my eye on a few Dell builds on the auction site, may be an excuse to get one.

Its certainly the cheapest way to go. I wanted to build one from scratch, but I couldn't justify the price.
I just need to put a bigger HDD in to increase my proxy cache size. It's amazing what you can do with pfSense.
