Having always used Asus routers with my VM superhub in modem mode, I would say look at the Asus range, had an N66U and now a AC86u, the latter is over your budget unless you can stretch another £50.

no problem as such ,but the router I have ( n56u ) it has been dropped a couple of times as is starting to play up so I'm thinking of getting something to replace it

Try putting the hub into router mode and seeing how you get on. There's apparently been a new firmware out for the Hub 3 which means it's not terrible any more.

I used to do the third-party router thing for ages and now I just have a BT Hub 6X and haven't really been that fussed about replacing it, works fine tbh.

OK so I got the
ASUS DSL-AC68U WiFi Modem Router

but my lappy it says ( is unable to connect to the network ? )...all the ethernet PCs in the house connect fine , but nothing wirless..and the wireless in the router is turned on.

anyone know what I have to do please ?

well the wife's lappy wont connect either and none of the tablets in the house will connect

Does it have to be set as an " Open System " ? because setting it to open is the only way anything connects

Presumably if you set it to open there's no security and everyone within range can connect whether you'd like them to or not?

What options is it offering?

Are you sure that you've set/know the new security key and you're entering it correctly on the devices?

As above, maybe you've set the wireless password wrong.

I have the 68U myself for a few years now and it's still rock solid. No issues at all with the wireless. I'm using WPA2-Personal if I remember correctly.

also got the ASUS DSL-AC68U and its been fine, go on the router settings and have a look maybe change wireless passwords.

edit got the AC88U sorry lol

OK so even though you're all freaking me out lol....I think I've got it all up and good now :)

thank you :)

OK one more question please
do I need to bother with the AiProtection - Network Protection( trend micro ) fuction that is in the router ?...or do I just leave it off.

Thanks. So it’s a bunch of really specific advanced features that 99% of people would never need combined with the risk of hidden malware and a lack of manufacturer support? It’s not like it actually makes the router faster / improve the range etc.

What an ignorant statement

I leave AI protection off.

Yep, @pioneer2000, Merlin firmware is top custom firmware for Asus routers and I think I read its even highly regarded by Asus themselves, to say there is a of risk malware is complete rubbish.

Here is what Merlins firmware specific goal is:

"The primary goals of this project are to fix bugs, add a few basic features and tweaks to the original firmware. This firmware will try to remain as close as possible to the original firmware. If you are looking for a slew of advanced features, then this project is not for you. Look at TomatoUSB or DD-WRT, two excellent products that might suit your needs better."
