so i have a crappy router from sky a Thomson jobbie, i went to use my laptop in the garden for the first time this year, talking between 31ft and 110ft!
it fails to pick up at 30 foot at the table and certainly dosnt work up at the seating. although works all around the house and even in the kitchen

main reason i can only see on restrictions is 1 supporting main wall and an out side wall.between the router and the garden plus the router being crap its self!!

i cant move to router else were so need some thing with more juice! or am i going to struggle to find any thing which this capability?

thought id put a floor plan to show what i mean! my amazing skills on paint :o

Probably best off using a pair of powerline adapters (god, never thought I'd recommend one of those) to allow you to place a wireless access point next to the back door (or as close to it as you can get).

So it would go "Only Phone Socket" > Router > Powerline Adapter #1 > House Ringmain > Powerline Adapter #2 > Wireless Access Point > Garden.

It's basically impossible to say, there's so many wireless signals around and so many things which interfere with wireless it's very difficult to say what range you should be getting and what you would get even if you put a wireless access point inside the window by the garden. Not helpful I know but simple truth is it's difficult to say...

yer i understand , there's 2 other wireless signals show-able on the laptop both sky
never heard of a powerline adapter! ill look it up!

so what if i run a telephone line from my main house socket to a socket in the kitchen and hook up another wireless router? is it possible to have two routers on one line? then my laptop or ipod touch can switch automaticly between the two as needed

my pc runs wired so no messing about with that

Some quick thoughts
  • Moving the router right next to the phone socket. Away from PC interference and a possible sync rate benefit using the shortest run of ADSL cable. Maybe lift it up off the floor, too.
  • Switching the wireless channel.
  • Putting a high gain, possibly directional, antenna on the router.
  • Getting a decent external wireless adapter for the laptop, such as those from ALFA Network and considering a high gain antenna for that.
All way cheaper than a pair of powerline adapters and additional wireless repeater.

router has been near and far away from pc,

also it is off the floor with a 1 metre cable

cant switch channels as far as im aware its a sh!t router

cant fit a an Ariel as again its a sh!t router

To get 110ft (Garden + 2 rooms) with 2 brick walls in the way is going to cause most WAP's to struggle.. Your router isn't 'crap' by a long stretch, it just isn't a miracle worker either..

Some WAPs (Wireless Access Points) can be used as repeaters, or just get a dedicated wireless repeater, they don't cost the earth, so you could use one to extend your wireless with minimum fuss, ideally I'd get power to the shed and place on in their (or in the loft/upstairs bedroom), it'll cover the Garden nicely, whilst your house will be covered by your existing router, no extra wires or network connections required.. and some like the linksys we use in work has an external aerial + socket just in case you need it..

:)

ncjok yes your right its a netgear, dont know why i thought it was the other

demon, i got power in the shed 13 plug gang extension to be exact lol.
im not very good at wireless stuff. so i need a dedicated wireless repeater?

You can't possibly be referring to the DG834GT :D

Supplied 2 dBi antenna

5 dBi antenna

10 dBi antenna

So after 12 posts can we now deduce that you have a black Netgear DG934G? I can't be certain from the limited pictures and information around whether it has an internal antenna and if it can be upgraded without major hassle.

There is some discussion around that reorienting the device on it's different sides and faces may provide better coverage in the desired direction.

The reason I mention using a repeater (either dedicated, or a wireless access point (WAP) with repeater functionality) is that it just 'augments' the wireless signal you already have.. extending it 'further'....

e.g.
http://www.linksysbycisco.com/UK/en/products/RangeExpanders

Of course a lot of normal wireless access points have a repeater mode that does the same thing, just do a bit of googling, and you can find lots..

How confident would you be in saying that an aerial upgrade in his current position would allow full coverage through 2 brick walls and 100ft of garden?

The Cisco setups we use with external aerials struggle with that kind of distance/infrastructure, and why we use repeaters for anything over 50ft..
:)

its not that white one, i even know that one is ******, ive had that one and ordered to have a diffrent one sent it always crashed, and always slowed down after a cetairn while say id start off at 300kb/s it would slowly reduce to 80kb/s in the space of 5 minutes and i have no dl limits nor do i download a lot!

the router is one of these Netgear 934G

thanks demon ill look in to that

can i just double check if its possible to run two routers from one phone line, i ask because ill just stick the router in the shed and run a wire round the house.

i mean its not important that i have wireless in the garden, it would just be nice!!

it is but not necessarily in the way you are thinking

as mentioned previously you would be better with a powerline / wireless access point combo

I think most of the WRT series will be fine for what you need (WRT54G/GS/GL) and any antenna that will fit the router will be fine, I think I use 7db ones bought from Linksys in the stand bought from Linksys too.
