I want to add a vpn service to my connection and I've decided that a router with flashed firmware is the best way to go.
I shall be putting my Virgin Superhub into modem mode to do this. I'm not fussed about the wireless capability of the new router as I've already connected an oldish Asus router configured as an access point to the Superhub via homeplug and it works very well, I don't want to mess this up!

The point is, will any cable router do?

If you're wanting to use third-party firmware (e.g. DD-WRT) you'll need to check the hardware compatibility lists they provide.

If you're looking you'll need to check the hardware version as well as the router's model number.

Remember that if you put the Virgin hub into modem mode with a router behind it you'll need to connect your access point to the router rather than the hub.

You should probably start with your selection of VPN provider and work back from there.
