Spec me a screen recorder (.avi/mpg/.mov format)

Howdy. I'm planning to make some video tutorials for a course I'm currently running. Can anyone recommend me an app that will record everything that I do on-screen and turn them into avi, mpg or mov file formats? I used one about 4 years back but can't for the life of me remember. Free/trial would be better as its the end of the academic year and budgets are nearly gone!

The mouse etc. goes a bit laggy in the output video for some reason, but you don't notice it when recording.
