Spec me a SDS Hammer Drill

I need to drill some 8mm diameter holes into some pretty tough old school bricks to attach some poles for some CCTV cams.

My Bosch cordless hammer drill can't really cope with it, taking ages to drill one hole and barely touched the surface even though the reviews on Amazon say it's good for masonry.

I've been looking at this Titan SDS drill on Screwfix (https://www.screwfix.com/p/titan-ttb872sds-3-27kg-electric-hammer-drill-240v/310vv) do you think this will be up to the job?

I don't want to spend loads as I don't know when I'll next need one and I'm not bothered about it being cordless, rather have more bang for buck with mains power.

I did have this massive old SDS drill once that was like a big tank but sold it off years ago when I was skint. How times change. :)

Hang on a minute, you're just drilling 8 mm into bricks? What bosch hammer drill have you got, I'm amazed you're struggling with it.
The titan will certainly do the job but it looks over powered for this task.
P.s. I used to have a titan table saw. It was fairly rubbish. It certainly had power but was very inaccurate. I've used a titan breaker a lot and it did the job but the handle broke.
If you can afford it I would get a better quality hammer drill, around 60Nm, makita, milwaukee, or dewalt. I don't think you really need SDS.

It's this jobbie off Amazon, they are tough old bricks though.

There is no steel in or behind the brick but even so I barely touched the surface when I gave up. And yes I was using the correct settings, even tried them all.

Yeah the green Bosch I got will still do for other general jobs about the house etc as my other drill was just a cheapie no name I've had for years.

I've bought the Titan now anyway but not got round to the task yet.

Just to update.. The £50 Titan drill I linked to in my original post sliced through the bricks with ease. If it can manage these then it should work on anything I throw at it in the future. :)

The bricks to the right of that picture are engineering bricks. They are very hard and highly abrasive. They will absolutely rubbish any drill-bit you use and to make matters worse a high impact masonry drill can potentially shatter them.

The bricks on the left, well, can't tell, but if they are engineering, then you are in a world of pain again. An SDS drill will be a lot better, but even so the bits will suffer badly.

You may do better just buying a few 8mm bits and throwing them away after drilling a few holes, but yes, those bricks are very expensive on drill bits.

The bricks I drilled are the light gray painted ones on the left. Proper old school from when the property was built over 100 years ago.

I had to move the top bracket down next to the bottom bracket as I couldn't get the SDS drill in between the wall and the roller shutter box but it is still very sturdy.

If it makes you feel even better I bought the titan over 6 years ago, it's done a whole house renovation and all diy jobs, cutting up concrete, chasing and still going great.

Extremely good value tool.

Yep it's been great so far but only used it a handful of times just hammer drilling, definitely a good purchase.
