I run a small file server at home. It houses 4 hard drives and is on 24/7. Recently I have had quite a few drives need replacing, the latest being my new 640GB WD after only a couple months of use!

I feel that the heat in the case might be an issue. They are currently sitting in an Antec 4480 case behind my desk. This case provides no airflow over the drives..

I would be looking at a case with space for 4 drives, smallish in size with that could provide decent airflow over the drives, ideally with a 120mm fan infront of them.

I've been considering the Silverstone Temjin but am a bit reluctant to spend £75 on a case that will be stuck behind my desk!

Any other ideas?

Cheers,
Andy

Im very novice to this however you may wish to consider the Antec 300. http://www.antec.com/ec/productDetails.php?ProdID=08300#

Why? Because its cheap - ~£35 and has room for two 120mm fans in front of the hard drives. That whole front face is honey combed so air flows through really easily. Air is then withdrawn using the rear and top mounted fans.
Theres space for 6 drives, its a midi case (smallish) and has washable air filters to stop most of the dust getting to and destroying the hard drives.

Not entirely convinced that heat is the cause, HDs can run pretty hot without falling over but still, for a file server keeping them cool is sensible.

If you want something cheap then the suggestion jazzy639 made of the three hundred actually makes sense. It'll keep the rig very cool but it may be a bit noisy (though having said that, the hard drive cage while lacking any dampening seems very quiet for reasons I haven't been able to discover).

It is a tall(ish) case though so you might want to check the dimensions....

Yeh I do quite like the look of that Antec case..

I suppose heat might not be the cause and thinking about it, it has only been two dodgy drives in my server in a year. One 400 and one 640, both WD. The other drives I have replaced have been a 400 in my main PC and its RMA replacement that died after two weeks of use! I still think they are running far too hot.. I hate hot things in my PCs, hence why I have watercooling!

Good thought on the dimensions, I'll grab a tapemeasure from somewhere and work it out! :)

It looks taller than it is:

45.8 (H) x 46.5 (D) x 20.5 cm (W)

According to Antec, which is a few CMs taller and longer than the 4480 at 42cm (H) x 20cm (W) x 42cm (D).

Those IcyDocks are quite nice but I decided to go for the Antec 300.. Not much bigger than my current case, seems decent inside and is a good price! :)

Also sticking a dual core in it while I have it apart.. :)
