Spec me a server for home use

Hi all,

I've currently got a HP Microserver and absolutely love it however in the coming future I want to buy a bigger case so I can fit more drives in there.

This wont be in the next few weeks, but maybe months. I need prices of HDDs to decrease first, but this thread will give me an excellent idea of what I can get and is available to me.

The case I've chosen is the Fractal Design Define XL

The main use of the computer will be to

• Stream 1080p to 2 computers (very rarely will it be simultaneous but it may happen)
• Download using Sabnzbd
• Store important information

I have a copy of WHS 2011 which I will be using, coupled with FlexRaid

So that's my list, but I have no idea about the innards tbh.

Next step up from a Microserver would be a ML110 G7, after the cashback they can be had for around £240. Bargain for a proper server with a quad core 1155 CPU. I believe they have 6 bays.

I want to get that case about because I know eventually I'll need more than 6 bays.

At the moment I have no raid system set up and have filled almost 7TB of data!
So the more drive bays available the easier it'll be for me in the long run.

Xeon 1230+DQ67SW+8GB ECC RAM+ESXi5+OpenIndiana = ZFS Fileserver that will be utter badass.

I'll have to have a look at that, but I feel it's more customising that I'm capable of.
It took me absolutely ages to understand what I was doing with WHS2011 I think this might be a step too far
